CMP Summer Air Rifle Camp Alum Earns Spot on 2016 Olympic Team

On April 4, 2016, Virginia "Ginny" Thrasher, 19, of Springfield, Va., secured her seat to Rio during the Olympic Selection Match at Fort Benning, Ga. - clinching a Team USA spot with a score of 586/600 in the match. She will be representing the United States on the women's three-position rifle team in August at the XXXI Olympiad in Brazil.
"It's been quite the experience, learning the path for qualifying for the Olympics - because I knew absolutely nothing about it," she said with a laugh.

Competitors Embrace New Featured Event at CMP's 2nd Annual D-Day Match

TALLADEGA, Ala. - On the weekend of June 4-5, over 250 eager competitors arrived at the Civilian Marksmanship Program's (CMP) Talladega Marksmanship Park for the 2nd Annual D-Day Match. The Inaugural Match was fired last June during the dedication of the park opening, giving a celebratory overtone to the 2nd Annual event by marking an important moment in CMP history - one excitement-filled year at Talladega Marksmanship Park.

Women's Air Rifle and Pistol Team Members Chosen During Olympic Trials at Camp Perry

CAMP PERRY, Ohio - The Civilian Marksmanship Program's (CMP) Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center hosted the final opportunity for athletes vying for a trip to the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro in August during the last Olympic Trials of the year, June 3-5 at Camp Perry. The event was conducted by USA Shooting, the National Governing Body of shooting sports.

In the women's competition, Sarah Scherer, 25, earned the last slot in women's air rifle after her finals performance on Day 3 of the trials. Only three points ahead of the closest competitor after shooting qualification, Scherer needed to hold strong on the line in order to guarantee herself a place on the team. With a second place finish in the final, she did just that.

In the men's competition, Will Brown, 24, earned the air pistol slot after defeating 2008 and 2012 Olympian Jason Turner in Day 3's finals. This was Brown's second Olympic Trials - earning an alternate position in 2012.

With the excitement of making the Olympic team, his mind was still trying to catch up with the moment, saying, "I don't know how it all feels yet. I'll let you know tomorrow!"

CMP Club News: Abraham Lincoln High School JROTC
A Letter From Lieutenant Colonel Steve Osterholzer, the Senior Army Instructor of the JROTC program at Abraham Lincoln High School - I'm writing to share a bit about this important program that's making a tremendous difference in the lives of high school students and to ask you to consider supporting these great young kids who are determined to succeed in life. Army JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) was implemented by Congress one hundred years ago "to instill in high school students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment." It's one of the largest citizenship programs in the country; with nearly 300,000 students enrolled in nearly 2,000 schools world-wide, it has the mission to motivate young people to be better citizens. The program instills in high school students the values of loyalty, duty, respect, teamwork, physical fitness, honor, integrity, and selfless service to the community.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports
CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

Oklahoma 4-H Shooting Sports:
4-H Shooting Sports offered in Oklahoma is the largest single project and currently has an enrollment in excess of 5,000 members statewide, with more than 500 active shooting sports instructors.

The Oklahoma 4-H Shooting Sports goal is a program for Positive Youth Development. Leadership development, community involvement, concentration, responsibility and high self-esteem are just a few of the many skills 4-H helps to develop within youth, to enable them to be productive and positive adults in our society.

The 4-H Youth Development Shooting Sports Program involves youth who have an interest in shooting sports and welcomes them into an accepting, caring group. The first things they learn are safety, discipline and respect for firearms, as well as for people. Youth are not permitted to use the firearms until they prove they can handle those three prerequisites.

To ensure that youth development and safety remain at the forefront of this program, the program relies heavily on the State 4-H Shooting Sports Advisory Committee. This committee, administered through the State 4-H office, includes county Extension educators, State 4-H staff, volunteers and instructor discipline representatives.

Major Highlights for 2015-2016:
  • 14 State Shooting Sports Contest involving over 1,250 youth
  • 8 discipline teams represented Oklahoma at the National 4-H Championships
  • 6 Shooting Sports Certification workshop
  • State 4-H Foundation's Dollar for Dollar Matching Programs, has helped provide financial support to teams attending the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships
Funds received through CMP are used to offset certification cost and to purchase target and equipment utilized at state contests.
