Former CMP Counselor Makes Bold (and Cold) Moves to Fulfill Dreams
Thinking back to her senior year of high school, Natasha Dinsmore, now 30, remembered how she thought she had it all figured out. She had earned a scholarship to play field hockey (the sport she loved) at a university in Pennsylvania and had landed one of the few slots in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange - a scholarship program designed for students wanting to become completely immersed in the German culture. The trip to Germany was, in her mind, just something fun to do before college - but in reality, it was the start of a chain of events that would lead her to some of the most unique experiences of her life. They were her "it happened for a reason" moments.

Para-athlete Junior and Coach Bound to Realize Rifling Dreams

Taylor Farmer, 18, of Castalia, Ohio, was born to persevere. Her entire life, cerebral palsy (a neurological condition that limits muscle coordination) has led her to have to work just a little harder than others to achieve her goals. The effects of the disease on her body cause her to walk with crutches and to use a wheelchair when she moves across long distances - but that hasn't slowed her down. In fact, with the incredible help of someone who happens to know exactly what it's like to be in her seat (so to speak), she has learned to thrive at lightning speed. Or, you could say, at the speed of an air rifle pellet.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports
CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports:
We appreciate CMP's continued support of Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports! We utilize CMP's support at the state level to offset expenses incurred at the annual 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator certification workshop. The Coordinator training is held in conjunction with our fall 4-H Shooting Sports Certification Workshop for archery, muzzle loading, outdoor skills, pistol, rifle and shotgun.

During the 22-hour certification workshop, Shooting Sports Coordinators learn the basics of positive youth development, ages & stages, risk management strategies, tips for operating their local programs and suggestions for working with the County 4-H Youth Extension Educator. Coordinators attend a portion of each of the discipline sessions to better understand the content that these instructors are learning. To conclude the training, the Coordinators participate as students in two practicums that the discipline instructors give as a part of their certification. The practicums further enable the Coordinators to experience the 4-H Shooting Sports program from the youth perspective.

Each of Indiana's 92 counties is required to have at least one 4-H Shooting Sports certified coordinator. We have 371 4-H Volunteers that are now trained as 4-H Shooting Sports coordinators.

CMP funding helps us to provide materials to the Coordinators, while keeping costs low. In addition to the 22 hours of instruction, they also receive a Coordinator's Handbook, shooting opportunities and room and board for the weekend.

Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports:
THANK YOU for your support of the Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Program! Your generous $200 donation provides support for our State 4-H Instructor Workshops. There were 101 volunteers certified in one of the six disciplines offered in 2015. The generous funding provided by CMP is utilized to help purchase some of the needed training supplies for conducting these volunteer workshops held across the state. During 2015, 4-H Shooting Sports leaders volunteered more than 42,000 hours of their time in reaching over 35,500 youth across Nebraska in various shooting sports related programs and events. Thanks again for your support of the youth shooting program in Nebraska.

Fairbanksans off to a strong start at American Marksman - By Sam Friedman, newsminer.com - FAIRBANKS - At first, Amy Gentry wanted to try the American Marksman rifle competition again to improve her score Monday afternoon. Then she learned she was in first-place for the northwest United States. She decided she didn't need to try again, first place was enough. American Marksman is a national action-style shooting competition that tests speed as well as accuracy. It's substantially different than the competitive shooting Gentry did last year at Hutchinson High School and that she'll do next year as a member of University of Alaska Fairbanks' Division I rifle team. McAuley High marksman accepts scholarship, to give college her best shot - By Glenn Jordan, Portland Press Herald - McAuley High is known as a basketball powerhouse, but the school's best shooter - a 6-footer, no less - has landed an athletic scholarship in a far more obscure sport. Sarah Schnupp, an 18-year-old senior, signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, one of the few colleges in the nation to compete in riflery. "I'm very excited at the opportunity," said Schnupp, who lives in Gorham and started shooting competitively in seventh grade through a 4-H program. Read the complete article.

Scholastic shooting program debuts - By Brian Broom, The Clarion-Ledger - The Mississippi Scholastic Shooting Program is probably something you've never heard of, but it could be coming to a school near you soon. "Jackson Prep had a shooting sports program for several years," said Jad Touchton, the range director at Turcotte Shooting Range. "Canton Academy contacted me and pretty much said they wanted to shoot against them. "As the word got out that Canton Academy and Jackson Prep were competing against each other, more schools got on board. It was something we had looked at, but never pulled the trigger on."
