CMP Club News: Walla Walla High School JROTC Rifle Team
|
Walla Walla High School, in the southeast corner of Washington State, is the home of one of the first High School ROTC programs in the country. With a military cadet program dating back to the 1890s, as far back as 1906 cadets have received instruction in the craft of Rifle Marksmanship, always being taught by a Non-Commissioned Army Officer. When JROTC and ROTC were created by the National Defense Act of 1916, Walla Walla was one of the first programs to apply for national certification due to its already existing cadet program. Receiving its charter in 1918, it remains one of the oldest continually operating programs in the United States.

The following series highlights questions asked of current college student athletes and coaches - some of whom are alumni of the Civilian Marksmanship Program. The series will cover how juniors can gain college attention, what they can expect in college as both athletes and students, as well as the sort of qualities coaches look for in their athletes - answered by those with first-hand experience. CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports
|
CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators. Arkansas 4-H Shooting Sports: The 2nd Annual Arkansas Junior Olympic Rifle Championships were held Nov. 13-14, 2015. Forty-nine (49) participants from 13 county 4-H Shooting Sports Clubs competed in the match. Five 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors conducted the matches. Three 4-H youth achieved qualifying scores for the National Junior Olympic Pistol matches in Colorado Springs, Colo. These youth will compete on the national stage at the Olympic Training Center in April. I used the $200 from CMP to purchase Orion Targets and match grade pellets for these matches. Every little bit helps when it comes to keeping costs of competition down for our 4-H Shooting Sports youth! Thanks for all you do, CMP! Alabama 4-H Shooting Sports: Alabama 4-H Shooting Sports Program utilized the generous donation from CMP to support a 4-H Team coached by Perry Mitchell to participate in youth CMP matches at the State and National levels. Coach Mitchell is not only a devoted and longstanding 4-H Rifle Coach, he also hosts Regional competitions and serves as Match Director for two separate State matches - the State 4-H Air Rifle Championship, as well as the State 4-H .22 Smallbore 3-Position Match! Perry has been a positive influence on countless Alabama youth. Alabama 4-H is indebted to Perry for his investment of time, resources and talent.

Post-World War II M1 Garand Rifles by Bruce N. Canfield - This article was first published in American Rifleman, August 2006 - The best battle implement ever devised." This oft-repeated praise from Gen. George S. Patton summed up his feelings about the "U.S. Rifle, Cal. .30, M1." Popularly known as the "Garand" after its inventor, Springfield Armory employee John C. Garand, the M1 garnered a well-deserved reputation as the finest general-issue military rifle of World War II. While several other nations, including Germany and the Soviet Union, fielded some semi-automatic and selective-fire rifles during the war, the United States was the only nation to arm its military primarily with a semi-automatic service rifle. When World War II ended in 1945, the M1 Garand was firmly entrenched as America's standard service rifle. Read the complete article.
