Driving Into the Unknown: the Morrow Family Story

CAMP BUTNER, NC - For one Ohio family, the Eastern Games came a little sooner than expected - mainly since they didn't even know that the event, or the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), for that matter, existed until a few days before it began. And so started a remarkable adventure for the Morrow family that they won't soon forget.

Eastern Games Competitor Rolls Through Life's Challenges with Positive Lead

CAMP BUTNER, NC - Mike Barletta needed a little push from his son to make it to the firing line at the Eastern CMP Games in May. It wasn't nerves of competition or the fear of failure that made it hard for him to approach it, but rather, it was the grass. It's tough to maneuver through when you're in a wheelchair. But just like every other aspect of his life, Mike found a way to keep rolling forward - sometimes with a little help from those around him.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

Delaware 4-H Shoooting Sports. This past year was a busy year for our 4-H Shooting Sports team. We utilized your generous contribution to purchase ammunition for our shooting activities. A very significant aspect of our program is training and certifying instructors to teach youth. We use a significant amount of ammunition during these training sessions. We also teach women how to shoot in several of our outdoor partner functions.

Then there are the Conservation, Wildlife and Hunting Programs! Our youth do not go to the field to hunt until they have demonstrated proficiency on the range. When they go to the field, they are prepared. One young man with a small build had a difficult time getting his alignment and grip with his winter clothing. We had him open his coat and shoot with only his shirt to pad his shoulder. He was able to shoot that way and hold good groups. On the day of the deer hunt, he had an opportunity to take a shot at 50 yards. His field instructor couldn't understand what was happening when the young man started opening his coat to get down to his shirt sleeves. He told him the range trainer, who also owned the youth model 20 gauge, instructed him to shoot from his shirt sleeves. With the three deer on the ground, there was no question the method worked. It was nothing more than getting the right fit to do the job. The young men and women in the program also had the opportunity to hunt waterfowl. It was very apparent that the time spent on the trap and skeet field was worth the investment.

What you do for our program is greatly appreciated, as it provides an opportunity to get individuals to the range and field to experience the joy of the shooting sports.

The North Dakota 4-H Shooting Sports program continues to grow with support from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. In 2014, the 4-H Shooting Sports program is putting special emphasis in the sporter air rifle program. With .22 caliber rifle ammunition still locally scarce, instructors and parents are turning to air rifle as a way to teach rifle skills. Our program has nearly doubled this year and we expect that it will continue. The program has added an additional rifle and pistol state trainer to the program to certify basic instructors. Our goal is to train enough basic instructors to have at least five in each county.

A substantial investment has been made in our competitive program with CO2 air rifles, nurse tanks, stands, and shooting equipment. Indoor target shooting works well for North Dakota as only about six months of the year produce weather that people can comfortably target shoot outdoors.

For outdoors, we are starting a hunting silhouette program. Our CMP funds will be used to purchase three sets of hunting size steel silhouette targets to use in the program. The first event will be piloted at the North Dakota 4-H Camp during the Outdoor Skills camp week in June. We expect this program to generate interest in air rifle much the same as the 3-D animal target matches. We have created a scoring system and match condition for the event similar to hunting situations that one might find afield. The youth will move about the course similar to a 3-D archery course and try their luck at shots out to 40 yards on steel animal silhouettes. We plan to survey youth after the event to fine tune the course.

CMP has been an effective program for supporting North Dakota 4-H Shooting Sports and its 27 county clubs. Our clubs utilize the equipment discount program and training resources to design and conduct quality experiences for our youth. The training resources are excellent and should be part of any shooting sports program instruction. We provide them as standard training literature to our instructors for their programs.

Our CMP funds will be used to purchase three sets of hunting size steel silhouette targets to use in the program. We expect our youth to enjoy the program and increase our membership through program promotion. Thanks CMP for making this possible.

THANK YOU for your support of the Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Program! Your generous $200 donation provided partial funding for our State 4-H Instructor Workshops. There were 134 volunteers certified in one of the six disciplines offered in 2013. The generous funding provided by CMP is utilized to help reduce the cost to the volunteers attending and purchase training supplies for the workshops. Shooting Sports leaders reached over 4,300 youth across the state last year in the program.

News from the CMP

PROPOSED CHANGES IN CMP PISTOL PROGRAMThe CMP Pistol Program promotes and governs U. S. bulls-eye target pistol shooting with "service pistols." This program includes the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badges, National Trophy Pistol Matches, Pistol EIC Matches, the Pistol Small Arms Firing School and CMP Games Pistol Matches. This program is revered for its time-honored traditions and it enjoys the esteem of countless pistol shooters. Nevertheless, two critical concerns have caused the CMP to consider changes in this program. First, overall program participation has declined over a period of many years. Second, many shooters and match sponsors are calling for changes to increase participation and offer more competition opportunities. In response to these concerns, the CMP Rules Committee convened a "blue ribbon" panel of pistol experts to evaluate the CMP Pistol Program and recommend possible changes. The CMP Pistol Program Review Panel includes experts who represent all aspects of competitive pistol shooting, including experienced competitors, match officials and advanced pistol armorers. The Panel has produced a comprehensive document titled CMP Pistol Program Changes that is now posted on the CMP website. This document describes the changes to the CMP Pistol Program that are being considered. The CMP invites pistol shooters, match officials and other concerned persons to study this document and forward their comments to competitions@thecmp.org. Comments should be received not later than 7 July 2014.
