CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

The Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports Program continues to excel - we are now in our fifth year, which doesn't seem possible - following is information in regards to our growth and sustainability:

Illinois is in its fifth year of the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Nationally the program has been in existence for 30+ years. Growth has been very strong in all phases of the program which includes: volunteer recruitment and training; addition of the new Hunting and Outdoor Skills discipline; 4-H member enrollment; obtaining shooting equipment and shooting sites for county programs; and, adding new training opportunities when so deemed necessary. Currently the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports Program offers the disciplines of: Archery(recurve and compound), Rifle (air and .22), Shotgun, and a newly added discipline of Hunting and Outdoor Skills.

Over the past 4+ years the following has occurred in the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program:  approximately 670 different adult volunteers have been trained/certified (adult volunteers must attend a 3-day certification training that is taught by our Nationally trained Instructors, and successfully pass a practicum) - only one discipline can be attended per training) - of the 670, over 100 have returned to a different weekend training to become certified in additional discipline/s; 96 of Illinois' 102 counties are now 'eligible' to have the program in their respective counties; last year's Illinois 4-H enrollment was approximately 3,100 enrolled 4-H members taking approximately 4,200 4-H projects in the Shooting Sports arena. For the adult volunteers and 4-H member enrollment a steady/huge increase of 30% per year for both has been demonstrated.

We utilized CMP's $200.00 gift last year at our State 4-H Shoot - which allowed participants a large reduced cost for ammunition use.

Thank you very much for supporting our state program and the National 4-H Shooting Sports program in general.

Successful 4-H Shooting Sports Coach's Workshop

In March 2014, the Kentucky 4-H Shooting Sports Educational Program hosted another three-day certification workshop for teen and adult volunteers who wish to offer their time and talents to this youth program.  At its conclusion, 171 volunteers were successful in becoming certified coaches.  They will return to their counties where they will provide quality instruction and supervision to our 4-H shooting sports club members, ages 9 to 18.

The workshops are offered twice a year for teens and adults who wish to become involved in the program or who wish to become certified in additional disciplines.  These important volunteer coaches log in over 35,000 hours annually working with approximately 15,000 youth in seven disciplines.  Funds to continue to offer this training are secured through donations from organizations such as the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP).

Our 4-H Shooting Sports program exists because of the dedication of these volunteers and the contributions of organizations such as CMP.

News from the CMP

PROPOSED CHANGES IN CMP PISTOL PROGRAMThe CMP Pistol Program promotes and governs U. S. bulls-eye target pistol shooting with "service pistols." This program includes the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badges, National Trophy Pistol Matches, Pistol EIC Matches, the Pistol Small Arms Firing School and CMP Games Pistol Matches. This program is revered for its time-honored traditions and it enjoys the esteem of countless pistol shooters. Nevertheless, two critical concerns have caused the CMP to consider changes in this program. First, overall program participation has declined over a period of many years. Second, many shooters and match sponsors are calling for changes to increase participation and offer more competition opportunities. In response to these concerns, the CMP Rules Committee convened a "blue ribbon" panel of pistol experts to evaluate the CMP Pistol Program and recommend possible changes. The CMP Pistol Program Review Panel includes experts who represent all aspects of competitive pistol shooting, including experienced competitors, match officials and advanced pistol armorers. The Panel has produced a comprehensive document titled CMP Pistol Program Changes that is now posted on the CMP website. This document describes the changes to the CMP Pistol Program that are being considered. The CMP invites pistol shooters, match officials and other concerned persons to study this document and forward their comments to [email protected]. Comments should be received not later than 7 July 2014.

Last week, we posted a picture of an air rifle score of 599 - 51, fired by Sarah Osborn. Sarah's score would have been a new Precision Class Overall National Record, but, due to a scoring irregularity, she unfortunately will not receive an official record. It is important to note that she did nothing wrong, and it was Sarah herself who brought this issue to the CMP. Sarah has demonstrated time and time again that she is capable of shooting exceptional scores. More importantly, she has also shown an incredible amount of integrity and sportsmanship in the process. Great job, Sarah. Keep up your exceptional marksmanship and we know the record will be yours soon.
