2014 Convocation Ceremony

The Convocation ceremony for the Department of Biological Sciences was held on Friday, May 30, 2014.
The Distinguished Alumnus Address was given by Dr. Steven Linberg Ph.D. Dr. Linberg received his Ph.D. in Physiology from the Pennsylvania State University and a B.A. in Biology from the University of Delaware. Dr. Linberg has more than 35 years in the regulatory industry with an emphasis on drug and biologics development, clinical trial design, and interactions with the FDA. Dr. Linberg currently teaches graduate courses at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Deborah Allen Honored with
Alberts Award
Dr. Deborah Allen was honored by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) and received the 2013 Bruce Alberts Award for Excellence in Science Education. Dr. Allen was cited by the society for her "pioneering and influential work in biology education." As the director of UD's Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning, Dr. Allen was an early proponent of problem-based learning -- a teaching method in which students work collaboratively to solve real-world problems that are challenging and complex.

At the Seventh Annual Frontiers at the Chemistry-Biology Interface Symposium (FCBIS) which was held at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmcy, Serge Ongagna-Yhombi won first prize for best poster presentation.

Graduate Student Honored at Eye Research Conference
Soma Dash, a second year doctoral student in the Department of Biological Sciences, has won the Members-In-Training Outstanding Poster Award at the 2014 annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Soma Dash currently works in the laboratory of Dr. Salil Lachke.

Dr. Anja Nohe - UD researcher seeks help for those with osteoporosis
Dr. Anja Nohe calls osteoporosis, "a significant disease and a silent disease," affecting some 10 million Americans and leading to more deaths from osteoporosis-related fractures among women in the U.S. than breast and ovarian cancer combined.
