AIA Arkansas Members,
My name is Laneigh Pfalser and I am the new communications director for Brent Stevenson Associates. I have replaced Alexis Teal who has been offered an amazing opportunity to work for Special Olympics in their Torch Run campaign. We are all very excited about her new opportunity but she will be missed! I wanted to take a minute to say how blessed I am to be working with you all and I'm excited for the convention coming up in just THREE weeks! It is going to be a ton of fun and will feature some truly stunning achievements of our membership. (That was also definitely a blatant plug for everyone to get registered for the convention ASAP.) I hope you enjoy the September issue of Columns and that you're geared up for Autumn and pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING! Just kidding. We all know apple is what the cool kids are eating these days. Laneigh Pfalser *Use the links on the left or simply scroll down the page to see what has been and what will be going on with AIA Arkansas. If you have news you would like to share that meets the submission guidelines, please submit it to me, Laneigh Pfalser. The next deadline is October 25th. |

Vote online for the Members' Choice Award
Voting is ongoing for the Members' Choice Award for best project. If you have not cast your vote yet, please go to the website and log in to vote!

Voting for the People's Choice Award has ended but we appreciate everyone getting their friends and families involved in the voting process. The more people talk about our industry, the more notoriety we receive. The only way to do that is to get our membership talking about the profession they love!
The winners of the People's Choice Award will be announced at our Annual Awards Banquet in Hot Springs on Oct. 16th.
Good luck to all the submissions!

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intended for licensed architects, engineers, or building code officials, this course certifies attendees as Building Evaluators in the California Safety Assessment Program (SAP). The program is managed by CalOES with cooperation from professional organizations, including the AIA. It utilizes volunteers and natural aid resources to provide professional architects, engineers and certified building inspectors to assist local governments in safety evaluation of their built environment in an aftermath of a disaster. SAP is the preferred training standard of the AIA Disaster Assistance Program, which provides leadership, advocacy, and training to architects who are interested in volunteering their professional skills in times of crisis. This workshop will teach participants to conduct rapid damage assessments of structures affected by natural and man-made disasters, including earthquakes, wind and water. It also teaches the appropriate protocol for coordinating with emergency managers to limit professional liability. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to consistently and safely assess structures for habitability. Licensed architects, engineers, and code officials will be registered as CalOES SAP Evaluators.
COST: $250 Includes lunch and course materials.

SECTION NEWS
Central Arkansas
"You Rock! Don't Ever Change."
For many, this is a cliched term teenagers write in each others' yearbooks when they don't know what else to put. For AIA Arkansas's Central Section Chair, Jonathan Opitz, it is a gentle reminder that his teenage career dream actually didn't change. And he's banking on the fact that yours didn't either.
In a world of budgets, RFQs, change orders, compressed schedules, and value engineering, sometimes it is easy to forget how great it is to be an Architect. We are the lucky people who never had to let go of our childhood dreams. When asked that crucial question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" we answered: Architect. Not a completely uncommon answer, except we actually followed through with it and we became the dream. No one ever answers that question with responses of "waste plant employee," "customer service representative," or "bank loan analyst," yet people assume these roles as their careers. If I was asked right now what I want to be when I grow up, my answer would not waiver for a second. I want to be an Architect!
I am still in love with every aspect of Architecture that appealed to me at age 16. Not many professions get to straddle the line between art and business the same way ours does. The 16-year-old me would be pumped to know that I draw, build computer models, and work with amazingly motivated and passionate clients. It can be easy to get bogged down in writing contracts, checking submittals, or meticulously documenting every issue with a building on a punch list; all of which can sometimes be disheartening. We mustn't dwell on the monotonous or daunting task but instead view those items as the kindling for the fire that is our daily passion. The days we land a new project, work on design, or complete a project are all days that should be celebrated. I hope this little reminder helps as I know it's easy to lose sight of how great it is to be an Architect. Now go have fun and really impress the teenage you. Jonathan Opitz, AIA Architect/Designer/LEED AP BD+C AMR Architects Inc.

4th Annual NWA AIA Bowling Tournament Review
On August 28th, NWA Section held our 4th Annual Bowling Tournament to raise money for our Fay Jones School of Architecture scholarship.
We had a great time and a great turnout! Two AIA CEUs were presented; one by Tamko Building Products and one by Anderson Windows. Special thanks to Tamko and Anderson Windows for paying for our Lunch. Your sponsorship is always greatly appreciated.
We'd also like to thank Meeks Lumber and VCC for their contributions. We had about 60 people there for the CEU presentations and 51 for the bowling. Bowling teams were fielded by pb2, Modus (2), Polk Stanley Wilcox, Core, HP Engineering, Tatum-Smith Engineering, Meeks Lumber, and VCC.
We'd love to see that number increase next year and we're looking for feedback from those that chose not to participate this year. What could we do next year that would lead you to participate in our 5th Annual Bowling Tournament? Reduce the number of Bowlers on each team? Reduce the per-person entry fee? Bowl three games instead of two? Hold the event on a Saturday as opposed to Friday afternoon? Any ideas are welcome.
Get in touch with one of your local officers and let us know why you didn't participate, and what we need to do to entice you to participate next year. For all those that participated this year, if you have any ideas that would make the tournament better, let us know those too. We have a great organization with great people and it's always fun to get together with our colleagues in a social atmosphere.
From the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design
Ethel Goodstein-Murphree, our associate dean, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. this Friday at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. The lecture, "Sex and the Celanese House," explores architect Edward Durell Stone, a native of Fayetteville, and his lesser-known role as an early torchbearer for the American modern home. It pays particular attention to what his work reveals about changing patterns of domesticity from the interwar years through the 1950s. Click here to register for the event.

NEA Grant to Fund Design Development of Texarkana Art Park
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - A $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts will enable the University of Arkansas Community Design Center and Marlon Blackwell Architects to assist the city of Texarkana, Texas, to develop a downtown art park.
"We are very pleased to be a part of the city's effort to revitalize what is an incredible downtown," said Steve Luoni, director of the Community Design Center. "Though surrounded by prosperous suburban growth, Texarkana's sleepy historic core contains outsized architectural treasures for a city of its size - a 1,400-seat, 1920s performance hall, a long-standing regional arts center, stately federal and municipal buildings, and highly livable downtown neighborhoods. The design team's proposal draws on the city's legacy in the visual and performing arts as well as a burgeoning local food scene to organize scattered investment in the downtown."
