Hey ,

Spring has officially sprung! While Arkansas is known for its somewhat bipolar weather patterns, it appears we're starting to see some of that warmer weather so many of us have been patiently (and some, not so patiently) awaiting. We hope you're enjoying the warmth of the sunshine and that it inspires you to design something magnificent!

"We could all take a lesson from the weather; it pays no attention to criticism."

As always, use the links on the left or simply scroll down the page to see what has been and what will be going on with AIA Arkansas. If you have news you would like to share that meets the submission guidelines, please submit it to Alexis Teal. The next deadline is June 30, 2015.

ENJOY!

First use of Electrochromic Glass in Arkansas

The new Mercy Orthopedic Hospital in Fort Smith is the first facility in Arkansas utilizing electronically tint-able SageGlass®, a product of Saint-Gobain, to tame the sun for comfort and efficiency and to make an architectural statement about the organization's healthcare mission. Views from the building were critical to the architectural design of the new expansion. The hospital faces west to address the intersection and vehicular circulation. And the exterior landscape features lush, gorgeous gardens to provide patients with serene views of the outdoors. Architect Michelle Teague at Polk Stanley Wilcox in Little Rock and Mercy chose SageGlass because it solves the glare challenge while preserving the outdoor views. SageGlass is electronically tintable glass for windows, skylights and curtain walls. It tints automatically or on demand to control sunlight, without blinds or shades, maintaining a connection to the outdoors and reducing energy consumption. Dynamic glazing also addressed Mercy's daylighting, energy efficiency and green building objectives. For more information contact Ed Chitty at Featured Systems, ed@edchitty.com, 479-855-6422, or visit www.sageglass.com.

Hello from Big Ass Fans!

Two projects that use our fans were recently featured in an article in Architectural Digest. These two amazing tuberculosis treatment centers in Haiti by MASS Design Group use Big Ass Fans to help disinfect the air: "...industrial fans from Kentucky-based company Big Ass Fans are used to pull air into the upper volume of the room, where it is decontaminated with ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) lights." You can check out the full article here.

Do you have any current projects that I can assist you with?

Arkansas River Resource Center Home of the Little Rock Port Authority Earns LEED® Silver Certification

With the assistance of Viridian, the Arkansas River Resource Center was recently awarded Silver level of certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building program.

"When the Little Rock Port Authority Board of Directors decided to build the new office building, it was important to raise the bar and set a precedent for our future. Sustainability is very important to this organization and it made sense to pursue a LEED rated building. We are excited and very proud of this accomplishment", noted Chris Mathews, Little Rock Port Authority Board Chairman. Read more.

AIA Chat: Architecture as a Source of Reinvention

On April 1st, AIA Arkansas's own Reese Rowland, FAIA, hosted AIA National's April #AIAchat on Twitter. Rowland answered questions around architecture's role in helping libraries reinvent themselves. The Hillary Rodham Clinton Children's Library and Learning Center, designed by Rowland and Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects, in Little Rock is a recipient of the 2015 AIA/ALA Library Building Award.

Rowland on his experience hosting the chat: "I was interviewed and asked to field questions from across the country and the awards were announced at the end of the chat session. It was an honor to not only be one of the six libraries selected for the awards, but also to be selected for this chat as well. The AIA is also in the process of writing a case study on the project."
