Hey ,
The holidays are coming! The holidays are coming! We still have lots of shopping to do and hope you're a bit more prepared than we are. Nonetheless, we're all excited to spend some time off surrounded by family, food, and cheer. It's our favorite time of the year!

"All I want for Christmas is what Mies van der Rohe says I want for Christmas." -The Architect
As always, use the links on the left or simply scroll down the page to see what has been and what will be going on with AIA Arkansas. If you have news you would like to share that meets the submission guidelines, please submit it to Alexis Teal. The next deadline is February 1, 2015.
ENJOY!

REFLECTIONS
A Message from the President
As we rapidly approach the end of the year, I trust that it's been rewarding for each of you both personally and professionally. Your chapter board, its committees and volunteers have spent the year working toward building an ever more relevant chapter.
We've engaged in numerous public outreach efforts, met with your state representatives in Washington D.C., rewritten the chapter bylaws, assessed national AIA realignment, revamped and reenergized chapter committees, and hosted yet another successful state convention in Hot Springs National Park, with over 620 registrants and a record 100 exhibitors in 117 booths.
As I reflect back on 2014, it has been more than an honor to serve each of you as this year's chapter president. I am humbled by the significance of this role when considering the vast capability of the many men and women that served before--who helped build this chapter into something quite possibly unrecognizable to them today in size, sophistication and relevance to our profession.
I have the utmost confidence that this trend will continue under the stewardship of incoming 2015 President Mark Cahoon, AIA, alongside his chapter officers and your increasingly diverse and capable board.
Thanks to so many of you this year for your commitment of time, energy and promotion of our chapter and profession. If you haven't been actively involved, I hope you'll consider becoming more engaged for 2015. Blessings to you and yours at the close of this season and the beginning of a new year!
Wesley R. Walls, AIA

MEMBER NEWS
Marlon Blackwell, FAIA Named 2014 USA Ford Fellow for Architecture & Design
Marlon Blackwell is one of the nation's most respected regional modernist architects. His practice takes place primarily in Arkansas and combines vernacular traditions with rigorous formalism. Throughout his body of work, nature has been a persistent inspiration and he strives to create spaces that respond to the physical and cultural eccentricities of a place. Working in the second poorest state in the country, Blackwell's architecture uses an economy of means for a maximum of meaning and he makes spectacular buildings with very small budgets. Read more

The event was sponsored by Acme Brick, An AIA Arkansas Gold Ribbon Sponsor, and the East Section would like to thank them for sponsoring the event. Quite a few local AIA members attended the event and got to try their hand at laying brick. It was both challenging and rewarding and those in attendance agreed that laying brick is not easy and found new respect for the unique skill masons possess. Thanks also to R&G Masonry for hosting the event. Throw Out Your Journals
Moleskine Journalis a digital version of the physical notebooks that have been a favorite of architects and designers for years. It should be noted that all notebook apps are best utilized with a stylus of your choosing; a finger is not the proper tool to use here. This is one of the better choices for digital notebooks, as it offers features not found in other apps. While the interface is simple, it may take some time to become a power user. Read more
