Celebrating Architecture
A Message from the President

The promotion of our profession to the public at large and continued engagement with our local communities has been a growing and welcomed emphasis of the AIA both nationally and locally. Thankfully this initiative hasn't remained simply a "grand idea" relegated to our chapter's strategic plan. It's been deliberately and enthusiastically pursued through numerous initiatives across the state, including our intervention in the proposed SWEPCO transmission line placement near Thorncrown Chapel, the Arkansas Design Network (ADN) public lecture series, Studio Main in Little Rock, numerous Pop-Up neighborhood events, and many others.
This renewed emphasis has not been limited to our young emerging professionals. On May 27, the AIA partnered with the Arkansas Design Network in celebrating the publication of "Architects of Little Rock, 1833-1950" authored by the esteemed duo of Charles Witsell, FAIA and Gordon Wittenberg, FAIA. More than 200 friends and supporters gathered at the Historic Arkansas Museum for the book signing, and to hear testimonies from public figures and colleagues about the value of the author's respective work, and of documenting the priceless heritage of those who helped lay the foundation of the profession in central Arkansas, and for the whole state.
It was my honor that evening, on behalf of AIA Arkansas, to present each of them a letter of commendation in recognition of their accomplishment, and for promoting the contributions of architects and the practice of the profession to both their colleagues and the public at-large. It was an evening to celebrate architecture, and to recognize the role architects have played in shaping our great state. Thank you for those that have and for those that continue to make our chapter a more relevant and more engaged organization making a difference in our communities.

2014 AIA Arkansas State Convention
There's nothing quite as refreshing both physically and emotionally as a change in seasons...cooler weather, falling leaves and a great deal of football provide a mental change of pace from the sun, fun and stress of a hot summer. Fall also ushers in our annual AIA Arkansas State Convention, scheduled this year for October the 15th through 18th in beautiful Hot Springs National Park.
Travis Bartlett, AIA and his committee have worked hard to produce yet another excellent slate of speakers, Allied presentations, social gatherings, golf, biking, art contests, dinners, and so much more. Highlights include presentations from representatives of BIG (NYC), Fitzsimmons Architects (OKC), Hefft Projects (KC), McKinney York (Austin), Holst Architecture (Portland), and KEM Studio (Kansas City). Another unique highlight this election year are respective addresses from gubernatorial candidates Asa Hutchinson and Mike Ross.
There are more than 25 hours of continuing education and a variety of topics and speakers from which to choose. You will have the opportunity to receive 14 of 18 LUs required for your AIA National requirements, and you can fulfill ALL of your state license renewal requirements in one weekend!
So please, if you haven't already, plan to join over 600 of your peers on the architectural design community in Hot Springs on October 15 through 18. If you're anything like me, you'll leave refreshed, reinvigorated and ready to build a better world. Don't miss it!

ASSOCIATE NEWS
From Your Associate Director
Thank you all for your support of the Arkansas AIA. As we march toward the convention, only weeks away, I wanted to update you on some associate news as well as highlight this year's associate session. As you sign up for the convention, we want you to join us on Thursday October 16 from 1:30-3:45 for Mike Harbour presenting "The 360 Degree Leader". This lecture will give us tools and insights on what leadership is, what it is not and why it is important. The attendees will learn how to lead themselves and others, at all levels of an organization. Mike is a native of Little Rock and a certified John Maxwell coach, trainer and speaker. To learn more visit his website.
In National Associate News:
- Beginning October 1, 2014 you will be able to re-take a failed ARE exam after a 2 month waiting period, up to 3 times a year. Learn more in the article below.
- For those taking the ARE exam this website has replaced the ARE forum website.
- NCARB has approved realigning the Intern Development Program (IDP) to reflect contemporary practice. Learn more in the article below.
In Arkansas Associate News: The Emerging Professionals Committee is currently working on an initiative that will make study materials for the ARE more accessible to all Arkansans studying for the exam. It involves partnering with the state library system to house, care for and make study materials available. To accomplish this we will need your support! More information will be coming soon on this exciting endeavor so please stay tuned and look for future emails!

Reminder: Shortened ARE Retake Policy Goes Into Effect October 1, 2014
Beginning October 1, 2014, candidates who have failed a division of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) will be able to retake the division as soon as 60 days after the previous attempt and up to three times in a running year.
Candidates who have recently failed a division of the ARE may want to wait to schedule their retake until after October 1 to take advantage of the new policy, as this change will be applied to all new exam eligibilities and those not already used to schedule an appointment. Any retakes scheduled before October 1 will be subject to the current six-month retake policy and will not be able to be rescheduled under the shortened retake policy.
This change is possible because of the 2013 implementation of My Examination, a system that now provides NCARB with sophisticated technology to manage candidate services. This crucial improvement allows NCARB to decrease the wait time between retesting on a division while ensuring the protection of exam content.
Learn more about this new policy on NCARB's Blog.
NCARB Board Amends Intern Development Program
The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) voted to approve two significant changes that will streamline and overhaul the Intern Development Program (IDP).
Phase One focuses only on the IDP's core requirements by removing the required 1,860 elective hours. Once implemented in mid-2015, interns will have to complete 3,740 hours, instead of the current requirement of 5,600 hours. Read more

Design Activity in the Third Quarter Opens with a Bang
Firms see many reasons for declining licensure rates among younger staff By Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA AIA Chief Economist As of July, U.S. architecture firms have produced three straight months of accelerating gains in design billings. With a reading of 55.8 for the month (where any score above 50 signifies growth), the July reading reflects stronger gains in billings than any period since mid-2007. With solid monthly scores for new design contracts (at 54.9 this month) and new project inquiries (66.0), all signs indicate strong momentum building in design activity, which is expected to produce solids gains in construction later this year and into 2015.
