Response & Reflection

A Message from the President

Last month's devastating storms in Central Arkansas were heart wrenching, and laid bare the fragility of life in the midst of nature's fury.  While not every building can be practically constructed to withstand an EF4 tornado, the event serves as a sober reminder about the role buildings can and should play in providing safety and protection for their occupants, even while they're destroyed in the process.  Evidence regarding the types of structures susceptible to destruction, and the lack of adherence to sound construction practices was enlightening, if not discouraging.  Let's use this opportunity to educate ourselves and the public-at-large about the importance of building well, and to roll up our sleeves and lend a hand to those in need.  President Obama, touring the damage aptly observed that "The people of Vilonia and all the other towns devastated by the storm understand there's a lot of work that remains to be done."  There certainly is.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who were impacted by the storms.

Wesley Walls, AIA

President

Planning starts for Park Hill's 'pop up'

    CHELSEA BOOZER

    Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Volunteers have begun brainstorming on attractions for North Little Rock's Park Hill neighborhood during an event one weekend this fall to show what the community can be if the attractions became permanent.

Pop Up in the Rock - now in its third year - is an event put on by studioMain and Create Little Rock, an arm of the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce. Event organizers, volunteers and neighborhood residents work together to transform a chosen area into a vibrant urban community to gain momentum for permanent additions.

This year, the group chose to focus on Park Hill, a primarily residential area off John F. Kennedy Boulevard in North Little Rock. The group also has announced the location of next year's pop-up event as West Ninth Street in Little Rock between Broadway and State Street.

The Near-Impossible Challenge of Designing the 9/11 Museum

"Historical museums typically serve as a way to tell the official story of something that happened and what it means. This one is different. "It is a story that has no end," says Paula Grant Berry, a museum-planning-committee member whose husband died in the South Tower. The events of 9/11 are still raw in our memories and alive in our political and cultural climate."
