Legacy of Leaders

A Message from the President

Cafe Prego in the Heights neighborhood of Little Rock, aside from its notorious role as the birthplace of The Red Bar in Grayton Beach, Florida, is known for its eclectic style, and in particular the vast expanse of posters, flyers and photos that cover every inch of wall surface. It was there, many years ago, amidst the French Film posters and random wedding photos, that I noticed a picture of Jerry Wilcox, FAIA. Upon further inspection, I discovered it was a poster documenting all past presidents of the Arkansas Chapter of the AIA. I was as impressed then, as I am now, about the caliber of individuals who so capably served in laying a solid foundation for what has become a much larger, and hopefully ever more relevant and influential chapter.

It is the board's goal to build on that foundation in 2014 by updating the 2010-2012 Strategic Plan successfully rolled out under the leadership of Jerry Brackett. Having just formulated the outline of a plan at our recent AIA AR Board Retreat, details will be forthcoming, but please plan to get involved! I hope you will join me this year in honoring the legacy of past leaders such as Howard Eichenbaum, Yandell Johnson, Gordon Wittenberg, Noland Blass, Price Roark, Jerry Wilcox and so many others by considering how you can become more involved.

ASSOCIATE NEWS

ARE UPDATE: NCARB IMPROVES EXAM RESCHEDULING PROCESS

Candidates who fail a division of the Architect Registration ExaminationŽ (AREŽ) can now immediately reschedule the exam, under an improved aspect of the "My Examination" service introduced by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). While the six-month waiting period still applies to the actual date of re-examination, the old four-month waiting period for rescheduling has been eliminated by NCARB.

"This should resolve issues for some places or times when seat time in a test center is at a premium," said NCARB Chief Executive Officer Michael Armstrong. "Thanks to the new My Examination capability, and a suggestion from one of our customers, we are able to make this improvement."

For more information regarding My Examination and registration for sections of the ARE, please go to www.ncarb.org.

NEW DIVISION STRUCTURE TEST SPEC APPROVED FOR ARE 5.0

The final Test Specification outlining the division structure for ARE 5.0-the next version of the Architect Registration ExaminationŽ (AREŽ)-was approved on 7 December 2013 by the Board of Directors of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Anticipated to launch in late 2016, the future exam will include six divisions, and each will be standalone, single test administrations. In addition to determining the division structure, the test specification also defines the major content areas, called Sections; the measurement Objectives; and the percentage of content coverage, called Weightings. This ARE 5.0 division structure results from an effort to align the exam with the more commonly defined professional architect activities of practice management, project management, and project design. The six divisions of ARE 5.0 will include:

*              Practice Management

*              Project Management

*              Programming & Analysis

*              Project Planning & Design

*              Project Development & Documentation

*              Construction & Evaluation

NATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE OF AIA IN 2013

Click here for the final media coverage report of the year that contains 164 "According to the AIA" clips.  The high volume was fueled, in part, due to heavy coverage of the major AIA awards but also includes some noteworthy highlights:

* First ever mainstream / national coverage of the Gold Medal recipient in Fast Company and Huffington Post

* Two AIA Knowledge Community chairs (COTE, IFRAA) quoted in CNN.com piece on adaptive re-use of churches (article also ran in 30+ CNN TV affiliate websites around the country)

* The Atlantic Cities wrote about the AIA / MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism report on design + health

* Best business conditions for residential architects w/ AIA data cited by CNBC

* Numerous design trade publications covered AIA federal testimony on design-build contracting process

The report is quite long so you can click on the tabs at the very top to search by topic area: sustainability, con docs, advocacy, etc.
