REFLECTIONS
A Message from the President
Seasons' greetings fellow AIA AR members,
As the year draws to a close it is only human nature to look back on what has been accomplished and prepare for what the future may hold. This of course is true in our personal lives, but for this letter I would like to focus on our professional "lives".
My sincere hope is that the strong majority of you have prospered this year; that your practices have seen growth. All indicators show an up-tick in billing for Architectural Services. But just like the economy in general there have been, and will continue to be fluctuations. Let's just hope the growth trend continues into 2014 and beyond.
This year's AIA AR Convention was a smashing success according to both solicited and volunteered accounts. My thanks go out to Tim Maddox and the Convention Committee for all their hard work. The team at Brent Stevenson Associates, especially Joie Ketcham, has got this thing down to an art, and is the envy of many other AIA components. (Except Texas)
There was one high profile issue that was in the public eye that gave us as Architects an opportunity to have our opinions heard. I am of course referring to the proposed SWEPCO high voltage transmission line that would have come mighty close to the Thorncrown Chapel Campus. As fate would have it, as AIA AR President, I prepared the testimony as a qualified "intervener" that was presented to the Public Service Commission objecting to one of 6 routes proposed, specifically route 91. My personal connection to Fay Jones and this iconic building generated more than a little enthusiasm for me to see this internationally recognized architectural masterpiece left unaffected. We won the fight, our voice was heard, (along with many others) and route 91 was withdrawn as an option. As my term comes to an end, and I look back on what has been accomplished in 2013, this particular role we played, not just me, but AIA AR Board of Directors with support from AIA National will stand out.
I look forward to serving you one more year as Past President on the Executive Committee.
The new officers you elected at the convention will serve you well, and are well prepared to address the issues that we as Architects will face in the world of business, politics, and as stewards and creators of the built environment.
As a final note I would challenge more of you to become involved in AIA. There are section leadership positions that need to be filled. There are also opportunities for involvement in the committee structures that have been organized through our strategic planning. Past presidents (Jerry Brackett in particular) saw the committee structure as a way of increasing member involvement that would benefit us all. More voices make for a stronger AIA AR. Look to your website to consider where your voice can be heard.
Thank you, keep us looking good,
David McKee, AIA, LEED AP, ect.

AIA National and AIA Arkansas Help Defeat Proposed Power Line Project Near Thorncrown Chapel Site
By Kim O'Connell
A proposal to run electrical power transmission lines with 150-foot towers near the site of the acclaimed Thorncrown Chapel in northwest Arkansas has been defeated-at least for now. A diverse group of citizens and organizations, including AIA Arkansas and AIA National, opposed the power-line project, which could have compromised the natural setting so integral to the Thorncrown experience. Proposal Combines Student Debt Relief with Community Design Support Let's repay architecture student loans with community service By Shervan A. Sebastian, Manager, AIA Federal Relations Public service loan assistance programs have for decades been a driving force in attracting talent to some of America's neediest and underserved regions and sectors of the economy. Programs as varied as AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps as well as the medical, legal, and dental professions have all employed these incentives to provide communities with talented, civically engaged professionals, while offering one of the most coveted forms of support for financially burdened graduates: student loan assistance. Effective December 16, the minimum duration requirement for work performed that qualifies for IDP experience credit will be eliminated. The challenges are arduous for emerging professionals who choose the process of the IDP and ARE to attain licensure. The AIA continues to focus efforts and resources to represent our members in aggressively addressing the issues that have an impact on the goal of becoming a licensed professional. Despite the best of intentions to help emerging professionals on this path, the IDP, in particular, became prescriptive, confusing, bureaucratic, and increasingly difficult to navigate in a reasonable time period. 2012 Arkansas Fire Prevention Code: Effective January 1, 2014
The State Fire Marshal's Office is pleased to announce that on July 15, 2013, the Legislative Rules and Regulations Committee reviewed (approved) the proposed 2012 Arkansas Fire Prevention Code without objection. The effective date will be January 1, 2014. We are currently working with the International Code Council with respect to the actual publication and they assure us that the 2012 AFPC will be published and available for purchase no later than December 1, 2013. As everyone knows, the revision process is very extensive and time consuming. The successful adoption of the 2012 Arkansas Fire Prevention Code is the direct result of many hours of work by the Revision Committee and countless other individuals dedicated to making Arkansas a safe place to live and work. I, along with the staff of the State Fire Marshal's Office wish to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the revision and adoption process.

October ABI Shows Pace of Billings Growth Moderates Slightly
While business conditions improved at architecture firms for the sixth consecutive month, and the 14th month out of the last 15, the pace of billings growth slowed slightly in October, as the ABI score declined modestly to 51.6. (Any score above 50 indicates billings growth.) This score reflects a more moderate pace of growth than in September and may partially be due to the impact of the 16-day government shutdown during the first half of the month. However, future workloads continue to look promising, as both inquiries into new projects and the value of new signed design contracts increased in from September to October.
