Hey ,

Well, more than half of the year is gone and summer is in full effect!  We hope that you are making the most of the beautiful weather we have had.

As always, use the links on the left or simply scroll down the page to see what has been and what will be going on with AIA Arkansas. If you have news you would like to share that meets the submission guidelines, please submit it to Joie Ketcham.  The next deadline is September 15th.

ENJOY!

Actively Engaged

A Message from the President

As we enter the homestretch in the summer of 2013 I thought it would be good to take a look back and inform you what your AIA AR Leadership has been engaged in.

Many of you are no doubt aware of SWEPCO's proposed construction of a high voltage electric transmission line through a section of Northwest Arkansas. One of the six alternate routes, known as route 91, brought the 150 ft. tall towers and 150 ft. wide easement within close proximity of Thorncrown Chapel. As soon as the SWEPCO application was made public, the negative impact on one of Arkansas's and the nation's architectural treasures generated an outcry from far and wide. The AIA AR Board of Directors agreed that the Association needed to "intervene" (the legal term) in the proceedings to have our concerns placed before the Arkansas Public Service Commission. With the added backing from the National AIA, an attorney familiar with the PSC review process was retained. As AIA President and having been on staff with Fay Jones' firm at the time of construction of the chapel and Thorncrown Worship Center, I was in a unique position to write the testimony that was filed with the PSC.  I believe my words spoke for all of us when I described the great fear of damaging the experience that one feels in the presence of those buildings.

The good news is that there have been so many objections to this route from individuals, city leaders and other concerned organizations that SWEPCO has actually withdrawn route 91 from the application to the PSC. This doesn't mean that the PSC might not act on their own in a potentially negative manner, so I plan on attending the PSC Hearing August 26th in Little Rock to be present just in case.

I was fortunate to attend the AIA National Convention in Denver this last June where there was much talk about "repositioning" and emerging professionals. There were many great learning opportunities both inside and outside the convention. Denver as a host city was perfect. Next year's convention will be in Chicago and promises to be an equally great venue.

Our own convention, October 10-12 is shaping up nicely. Tim Maddox, AIA and his convention committee have put a lot of effort into the planning for this event. Brent Stevenson Associates and especially Joie Ketcham have fine tuned the convention planning process so that we are assured of an enjoyable and educational experience that has become the envy of our neighbors.

Keep up the good work,

Dave

David McKee, AIA

President

NCARB's BLACKOUT...Make the most of it!
Did you know the blackout adds 12 weeks to your rolling clock?
Don't waste it! Study this summer and be ready to pass another exam in September.

Coming This Month: My Examination - A New Service for ARE Candidates
Later this month, NCARB will launch a new service within My NCARB for Architect Registration ExaminationŽ (AREŽ) candidates to access their examination information and schedule appointments. The service-called My Examination-will be located within your online NCARB Record and will offer several new benefits, such as easy access to exam history, authorization to test information, rolling clock dates, score reports, and more. As announced in September 2011, Alpine Testing Solutions, Inc. will take over content and candidate management for the ARE, and Prometric will continue to be the Council's site management consultant. In order to facilitate the migration of data to the new consultant, there will be an estimated eight-week blackout beginning 1 July 2013. NCARB will grant an automatic 12-week extension to the rolling clock and is working with jurisdictions with their own rolling clock rules to ensure all candidates receive the same extension. Exams may be scheduled immediately following the blackout period, which is expected to end in late August. There will be no changes to exam cost or content post-blackout. Visit NCARB.org to learn about My Examination's exciting new benefits, the rolling clock extension, and how to prepare for the blackout.

Study Reveals US States with Highest Pay, Most Equality
Go to interactive chart

Figures released last month by the National Endowment for the Arts offer telling insight into the architecture profession across the US, with a helpful breakdown of the representation of various demographic groups.

The data, collected between 2006 & 2010, reports the number of architects in each state and their race, gender, age and income. The data reveals which states have the highest/lowest income, the best/worst gender discrepancies, and also offer insights into the average age and races of architects, per state.

States Fight Green-Building Leader Over Local Wood
LEED has been at the forefront of an explosion in energy-efficient, environmentally conscious construction over the past decade. Administered by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED program puts its stamp on an estimated 1.5 million square feet of new construction worldwide each day. But the program is facing an outcry from a growing number of governors and legislatures who say LEED uses unfair standards that effectively keep their states' timber growers out of the booming green-building market.
