Hey ,

Can you believe it is already November?  It is time to start stuffing your piggy bank in preparation of the holiday season.  There are only 52 days until Christmas!  We hope you have taken the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather before it gets too cold!

As always, use the links on the left or simply scroll down the page to see what has been and what will be going on with AIA Arkansas. If you have news you would like to share that meets the submission guidelines, please submit it to Joie Ketcham.  The next deadline is November 15th.

ENJOY!

Message from the President

Wow!  2012 is nearing its end.  In just a few short weeks, we will be eating turkey, unwrapping gifts and celebrating the beginning of a new year.

CONVENTION 2012

If you did not have a chance to join us in Hot Springs this year, we had another successful convention.  I would again like to give a special thanks to Mark Cahoon, Convention Chair, all of the Convention Committee members and of course, Brent Stevenson, Joie Ketcham and the BSA staff.  This year there were 550 registrants; over 300 were architects, associates & affiliate members. In addition, there were 207 allied members registered and 41 guests.  Everyone liked the new CEU scanners, it made the flow much smoother into the lecture halls.  It was one of the best slate of speakers we've had and somehow the speakers just seem to get better each year.  Congratulations to my friend, Tim Maddox, on receiving the 2012 Emerging Professional Award, as well as, all of the Design Award winners!  If you missed us, there is a link to all of the convention photos below!

TEAM BARACK or TEAM MITT?

I hope everyone has had a chance to make it to the polls!  Two fierce competitors have given their all, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney now yield center stage to voters for an Election Day choice that will outline our government and the nation for years to come.  Your decision will set the country's course for the next four years on spending, taxes, healthcare and foreign policy challenges.  Opinion polls show Obama and Romney in a virtual dead heat, so no matter which side of the fence you reside on - YOUR vote could make the difference!

As I mentioned in the beginning, 2012 is nearing its end.  I'd like to thank each of you for letting me serve as your AIA Arkansas President this past year.  It has been an honor and I look forward to continuing to serve AIA Arkansas!

2012 AIA Arkansas Chapter Awards

Award of Merit Recipient

George Wildgen, Hon. AIA was posthumously presented the 2012 Award of Merit at the state convention held in Hot Springs.  The award was accepted by his wife Mary Wildgen.  This award is given in recognition of an individual, public official, member of any allied profession, public agency or company that through interest, activity and concern with the profession of architecture, shall have advanced the cause of good planning and design and/or contributed to the dignity and value of the architectural profession.

Wildgen began his career with the chambers of Hot Springs and North Little Rock and moved on to head Little Rock's Urban Progress Association.  Later he simultaneously assumed the positions of executive director of AIA Arkansas and the Arkansas State Board of Architects where he served for 18 and 25 years respectively.

His AIA and state board positions provided him the opportunity to be of valuable assistance to the UA School of Architecture.  He served on the School of Architecture Professional Advisory Board for 10 years.  He was a periodic guest lecturer on design services marketing and twice provided the school's commencement address.

A skilled communicator, he was effective in elevating public awareness of good design and of the architects that make it happen.  His articles were published in several professional journals and an essay, "The Politics of Urban Design," was published internationally.

In recognition of his service to the profession, George Wildgen was elected to national honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects-the highest recognition the profession can bestow on a non-architect.

AIA Arkansas is proud to announce George Wildgen, Hon. AIA as the recipient of the 2012 Award of Merit.

Emerging Professional Recipient

Tim Maddox, AIA of Fayetteville, received the 2012 Emerging Professional Award. This award recognizes a new professional, practicing for less than 10 years, who has expanded the role of the architect through civic participation and professional mentorship.

Maddox is a Principal Architect of the Fayetteville, Arkansas-based firm, deMx architecture, which he co-founded in 2008.  He and his firm have appeared in numerous publications for their work.  He has received multiple design awards and has had a project included in the Emerging Professional Annual Exhibition installed at the AIA National headquarters in Washington, DC.  He was recently included in the Arkansas Business Journal, Forty Under 40 list of young talent in the field of architecture.

Maddox has been involved with AIA Arkansas for many years and is currently serving on the Board of Directors as the Northwest Arkansas Section Chairperson.  He will begin his elected, five-year tenure on the Executive committee in January of 2013.  He has served on the State Convention committee in different capacities, as well as the REALgreen Conference committee.

Maddox participates heavily in activities and organizations in the arena of community involvement.  He is a member of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, serving on its Construction and Developer's committee, as well as the Creative Economy committee.  He also serves on the Board of Adjustments and Appeals for the City of Fayetteville.

His civic participation extends into the non-profit arena.  He has participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2009, and currently volunteers as the Chair for the Northwest Advisory Council for the United Cerebral Palsy of Arkansas.

Because of the energy and enthusiasm he contributes to designing inspiring, livable buildings, involvement with city government and volunteering with non-profits, AIA Arkansas is proud to present Tim Maddox, AIA as the recipient of the 2012 Emerging Professional Award.
