2013 Looking Good!
The Idaho Mountains are full of snow and the 2013 river season will be outstanding! Come and join us for "The Great American Raft Trip!"
Late winter storms have added to the snow pack. Conditions look good for the beautiful Idaho and Eastern Oregon rivers. The Hughes Crew is ready to get back out on the water.
There is still time to book your 2013 rafting vacation with Hughes River Expeditions. We have spaces available on the June 13-17 Middle Fork trip, and on late August and September dates. Late summer is a great time to enjoy the Middle Fork's blue ribbon, wild Westslope Cutthroat fishery. We also have spaces available on the iconic Snake River through Hells Canyon - America's deepest canyon. Salmon River Canyon trips sport openings on selected dates in July and August. This year's Jazz Trip is on the Salmon July 30-August 3. Devon Barker will offer paddling instruction and support on two trips: Grande Ronde June 24-27, and Salmon River Canyon July 24-27. Devon is just back from the Santa Cruz Kayak Festival where she won the International Women's Division (Long boat division) and took 3rd in High Performance Women's Division. Way to go Devon! For our complete 2013 trip list go to Schedule & Rates online.
Check out our new video with some Hughes family boating history along with glimpses of the rivers we run today. Several of these pictures go back to the 60's and early 70's well before Hughes River Expeditions was formed.

A History of Canyon Drawings
Pictographs are magical and mysterious. Tucked away in remote river canyons, pictographs are a common highlight of days on the river. They range from 500 to 15,000 years old. Often, they are as visible and vibrant as when they were drawn, although some have become faded by sunlight, weather, and unfortunately human contact. Pictographs are made of an amalgam of mineral or vegetation mixed with a binder that is thought to have been either animal fat or blood. Depending on the mixture, some are brighter or a different color than others. Most Idaho pictographs are red. The "Tukudika" or Shoshone Bannock tribes occupied the Middle Fork Canyon. In Hells Canyon and Salmon River Canyon the predominant tribe was the Nez Perce. The drawings tell different stories ranging from battles fought to hunting grounds. Pictographs are a wonderful part of the Native American cultures. Be respectful and look "only". No touching, so they will be preserved for future generations.

Recipe for our Sockeye Salmon 2 ways
-Sockeye Salmon fillets
-Butter or mayo
-Lemon
-Dill Seasoning
-Johnny's Seasoning
-Brown Sugar
-Teryaki sauce
-Red Onion
With one fillet, put skin side down on a piece of tin foil. Spread thin layer of either mayo or butter on the meat side. Sprinkle dill seasoning and Johnny's Seasoning evenly over the butter or mayo. Top with slices of lemon. Roll up the tin foil so that the fillet is comletely enclosed.
With another fillet, do the same as above with the fish and foil. This time put a thin layer of butter. Next sprinkle brown sugar on the butter. Drip teryaki sauce on the brown sugar. Top with thin slices of red onion. Close the filet in the tin foil like above.
Cook these on your fire pan over open coals with the skin side still down. As soon as you see the juices come through the tin foil your fish should be perfectly finished. You can also bake these in the oven at home at 350 for about 20 min.
