Season's Greetings!

Dear Friend,

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season! It's been an exciting and life-changing year for DaVita Village Trust thanks to your compassion and generosity.

Together, we have touched, changed and literally saved the lives of hundreds of children and adults around the globe.  In India, Mexico and Haiti we are increasing access to dialysis treatment for people with no options available.

In Guatemala, we screened nearly 500 children at-risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and dozens are now receiving follow-up care to prevent kidney failure. We also screened thousands of men and women in the U.S. who are at risk of CKD and educated them on how to take care of their kidneys.

Because of the merger of Bridge of Life and The Kidney Trust, we are able to offer programs focused both on prevention and treatment. And we're very excited to be adding primary care to our programs as well. We are exploring opportunities both in the U.S. and in developing countries where these vital services are needed.

Next year is our most ambitious ever with a goal to impact more than 12,000 lives. It will take a village to do it, and we know we have the best. Thank you for your past support and know that every dollar and hour of volunteer service makes a lasting impact.

With your continued help we can keep on changing the world into one where everyone has the chance to live a healthy and fulfilling life. From the team at DaVita Village Trust, we wish you and your loved ones Happy Holidays!

With gratitude,

Lori Vaclavik

Executive Director

Program Updates

Guatemala Screening Mission

In October, a team of three volunteers--two Kidney Care teammates and one HealthCare Partners teammate--traveled with Bridge of Life, a program of DaVita Village Trust, to provide chronic kidney disease (CKD) screenings for children in Guatemala City. DaVita Village Trust partnered with Fundanier, the largest transplant and pediatric dialysis clinic in Central America, as well as their partner for eight previous medical missions.

The purpose of this mission was to identify children at-risk for CKD who live in an impoverished community within the city and to offer the necessary education and prevention tools to avoid chronic renal failure. According to statistics, in Guatemala approximately 100 children should be identified annually with CKD. Currently, on average, 50 children are actually identified, indicating that half of the children suffering from CKD never receive the necessary treatment.

Families from the Tierra Nueva community lined up early in the morning to receive screenings for their children. Together, the DaVita Village Trust team and Fundanier screened 475 children, and of those children, 197 returned for additional testing due to abnormal test results. As a result, 15 children showed significant signs of kidney impairment and were referred to a specialist to receive the treatment they need to live a long, healthy life!
Jamaica Surgical Mission

For one week in October, a team of vascular surgeons and an ultrasound tech traveled with Bridge of Life to make a difference for dialysis patients around the country. The team of five performed arteriovenous (AV) fistula placement surgeries to replace dialysis catheters and help improve the quality of treatment they receive.

Together, the team performed a total of 63 surgeries at three different hospitals. Over the course of two days, 22 AV fistula surgeries were completed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Kingston, a record breaking number of twenty-seven AV fistula surgeries were performed at the Mandeville Regional Hospital in Mandeville, and seventeen AV fistulas were completed at the hospital in St. Ann's Bay. The surgeons and technician put in long hours each day and even worked until midnight to complete all of the surgeries during their marathon session at Mandeville Regional Hospital.

DaVita Village Trust and Project Homeless Connect

In November, DaVita Village Trust participated in the Project Homeless Connect (PHC) resource fair in Denver, CO. PHC is a one day, free event where individuals and families experiencing homelessness can access services and resources including medical care, benefit assistance, employment services, haircuts, clothing and other community resources. DVT provided free kidney disease screenings and gave every participant information on where they could receive free follow-up care if needed.

Upcoming Medical Missions and Screenings
Bridge of Life Program
This year, the Bridge of Life program plans to complete 18 medical missions around the world. Here are the missions taking place this quarter:
  • Guatemala Enhancing Care - A team of HealthCare Partners primary care physicians, a dietitian and a social worker will travel to Guatemala to assess the health needs of kidney donors.

  • Belize Telehealth - A DaVita HealthCare Partner's dialysis center facility administrator will travel to Belize to help set up a new telehealth communication system and help the people of Belize receive dialysis care when there is no nephrologist in the country.

Your gift will provide lifesaving

prevention and care today and will

help meet the need for kidney care and primary care in underserved communities in the U.S. and around the world.

The Kidney TRUST program aims to provide CKD screenings to more than 8,500 people in 2014.

Stay tuned for upcoming events in 2015!

CKD Stories and News

Volunteer Stories - Patricio Cantillo

"I really appreciate the chance that I got from DaVita to join the DaVita Village Trust team in Guatemala," said Patricio. "This amazing and rewarding experience brought so much to my personal and professional life. I feel a lump in my throat thinking about helping these 475 children." Patricio continues, "I want to encourage all of my HCP teammates to volunteer and to join our efforts with DaVita Kidney Care teammates to reach out together to our patients, to our communities, and to the world, like the Company of One that we are in this Village called DaVita HealthCare Partners."
