BUILD A RAIN BARREL WORKSHOP
|
| Learn how a rain barrel can help conserve water and keep our lakes & streams clean, at an upcoming workshop on June 30th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Then build a barrel to take home. Rain barrels are used to collect rain that drains from your roof and runs down the gutters. A quarter-inch of rain falling on the average home yields a little over 200 gallons of water, and can fill a barrel in a matter of minutes. This water can then be used to water plants and gardens. This water would normally run across our lawns and driveways into the storm drains. Along the way, this water picks up fertilizers, oil, and other pollutants. This water is not treated before it runs directly into our lakes and streams. The workshop is brought to you by the North Central Wisconsin Stormwater Coalition and the University of
Wisconsin-Extension. Seating is limited to 20 people.
To register, mail $30 (check made out to UW-Extension) to: Marathon County UW-Extension (Rain Barrel Workshop) 212 River Dr., Suite #3 Wausau, WI 54403. The event will take place at the Weston Municipal Center Board Room(5500 Schofield Ave., Weston).

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY FOR FIREWORKS THIS 4TH OF JULY
|
|
Please be aware that the Everest Metro Police Department (EMPD), and many Wausau Metro Area Law Enforcement Departments, will again be enforcing fireworks violations during this 4th of July Holiday period under a zero tolerance policy. Staff has been instructed that barring some exigent circumstance, all officers and deputies shall issue citations for all fireworks violations they are called to. The general rule of thumb most people understand is that "If it flies or explodes, it is illegal", and that is usually applicable. The fact that there are so many firework stores and stands legally selling fireworks prohibited by WI Statute (unless you have a permit), tends to mislead some people into thinking they are legal to possess and use since they are sold locally. For more information please visit the Wisconsin Department of Justice page on Fireworks Law Information that references statutory regulations and permits.

BUILDING PERMITS REQUIRED
|
|
Spring is here, which means many of you may be planning some home improvement projects. Building permits are required in the Village of Weston for a number of home improvement projects such as fences, yard sheds, gazebos, exterior remodels (siding, windows and doors), swimming pools, in-ground irrigation systems, finishing basements, building additions, and metal roofs. However, you do not need a permit for shingle to shingle roof replacement.
If you are not sure if a building permit is needed for your home improvement project, please feel free to call the Village Municipal Center at 359-6114 and a Village staff member will assist you in determining if your home improvement project requires a building permit. Building permit applications can be easily picked up at the Village Municipal Center during normal business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, or can be accessed on the Village's website at http://westonwi.gov/384/Applications-and-Permits.

PARKING OF VEHICLES
|
|
As a reminder, all motor vehicles that are parked outside need to be licensed, street operable and parked on an all-weather surface such as blacktop, concrete or paver blocks next to the driveway or garage. They cannot be parked on the grass, which would include vehicles that are for sale. Inoperable or unlicensed vehicles need to be parked in a garage. Campers, boats, and trailers, may be parked on the lawn next to your garage or driveway. Also no more than 2 recreational vehicles (including trailers) are allowed to be parked on the property that is zoned residential.

RULES AND POINTERS FOR PEDESTRAINS AND DRIVERS
|
|
Pay attention to reduce your chances of being in an accident.
The most important safety tip to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities is to pay attention. You can significantly reduce your chances of being in a collision with a motor vehicle by obeying traffic rules and being aware of dangers posed by cars in your vicinity. Make eye contact with drivers if possible and make sure that they can see you.
Both drivers and pedestrians have certain safety responsibilities that depend on both circumstances and common sense.
Drivers must:
- Yield to pedestrians when crossing a sidewalk or entering an alley or driveway
- Yield to pedestrians who have started crossing at an intersection or crosswalk on a "walk" signal or a green light, if there is no walk signal
- Yield to pedestrians who are crossing the highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection where there are no traffic lights or control signals
- Not overtake and pass any vehicle that stops at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the roadway safely
Pedestrians must:
- Yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk or where the pedestrian does not have a green or "walk" signal and where vehicles have a green signal
- Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian
- Walk on and along the left side of a highway when not walking on a sidewalk. Note: This law does not apply to bicycles. Bicycles operate under the same laws as other legal vehicles on the road and should always stay on the right side of the road.
Pedestrian pointers to keep in mind:
Pay attention A recent report from the Federal Bureau of Transportation Safety concluded that the pedestrian was solely at fault in 43% of car-pedestrian collisions and that both were at fault in 13% of collisions. You can significantly reduce your chances of death or injury by obeying traffic rules and being aware of dangers posed by cars in your vicinity. For example: 58% of pedestrian-car crashes occur while the pedestrian was crossing the street. Pay close attention to cars in your vicinity. Make eye contact with drivers if possible.
Don't "Drink and Walk" Unlike driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, walking will probably not result in the death or injury of someone else - but it could very well result in yours. As an inebriated pedestrian your chances of suffering an accident increase significantly. If you've been drinking, take a cab or a bus, or let someone sober drive you home.
Take extra care at night and at dusk Walking at night increases your chances of death or injury. Drivers cannot avoid what they can't see. When walking at night, wear retro-reflective outdoor clothing or shoes or lights to make yourself more visible. Avoid wearing dark clothing. Most importantly, don't assume that drivers can see you. Always walk on the left hand side of the road or on the sidewalk. This way, motorists can see you and will not be approaching you from behind.
Provide proper supervision and training for children Young children up to age 9 often lack the judgment and experience to make good choices when dealing with traffic. Their smaller stature also makes them harder for motorists to see. Adults need to take special care to teach children to behave safely when they are around automobile traffic. Supervision is crucial through about age 9. Motorists are also responsible for child pedestrian safety. Slow down in school zones, near parks and pools and in neighborhoods. Parents dropping off children at school are a major threat to walking children and to those leaving motor vehicles. Stay cautious after dropping off your own child.
