HOW TO BUILD A RAIN BARREL WORKSHOP

The Village of Weston Water Utility will be hosting a FREE workshop on "How to Build a Rain Barrel" on Saturday, May 17th.

During this workshop, a presentation on water conservation and efficiency will be given as well as a presentation giving you many ideas and some general step-by-step instructions on how to build that perfect rain barrel unique to your needs.  Village of Weston residents and Weston Water Utility customers attending will leave the workshop with a white 55-gallon barrel.

All Village of Weston residents who harvest rain water via a rain barrel (or rain garden), are eligible for the one-time storm water credit (provided you have not received that credit already).  The storm water credit is calculated out at 68% of your annual storm water bill (example: $48.00/year fee for a single-family home = $32.64 credit).

Contact Valerie Parker at (715) 241-2607 or via e-mail:  [email protected] to register for this workshop.  This event is open to the public, but seating is limited, so please register in advance.

SPRING YARD WASTE PICKUP

This year's spring yard waste pickup will begin Monday, May 19, 2014. Have leaves, unbagged thatch, grass, clippings, pine needles, and brush less than 6 inches in diameter, placed on the shoulder the day before your normal refuse pickup. Please make sure to keep yard waste and brush in SEPARATE piles. If you have a curb and gutter, please place yard waste in the gutter. Yard waste should be placed in rows and should not exceed 5 feet in width.

Piles are to be placed so as to be clear of power poles, trees, and mailboxes for ease of pickup. Brush should be placed at roadside with stump ends of limbs placed in same direction, parallel to road. If yard waste cannot be reached by the village's machines it will then be the responsibility of the resident to dispose of the waste .

After the roadside collection, leaves and all pre-mentioned items can be brought to the village's yard waste site (free of charge) located at 8200 Ryan Street (.25 mile south of Weston Avenue on the west side). When bringing items to the waste site, please remove leaves from bags and dispose of the bags in the provided container.

BUILDING PERMITS REQUIRED

Spring is here, which means many of you may be planning some home improvement projects.  Building permits are required in the Village of Weston for a number of home improvement projects such as fences, yard sheds, gazebos, siding, swimming pools, in-ground irrigation systems, finishing basements, building additions, and metal roofs.  However, you do not need a permit for shingle to shingle roof replacement.

If you are not sure if a building permit is needed for your home improvement project, please feel free to call the Village Municipal Center at 359-6114 and a Village staff member will assist you in determining if your home improvement project requires a building permit.  Building permit applications can be easily picked up at the Village Municipal Center during normal business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, or can be accessed on the Village's website at http://westonwi.gov/384/Applications-and-Permits.

SIGN PERMITS REQUIRED IN COMMERCIAL DISTRICTS

The Village of Weston does require permits for most signs in the Village.  If you are a new business wanting to put up a sign or an existing business wanting to reface a sign, please call the Village at 359-6114 to obtain the proper permit applications or access one online at http://westonwi.gov/384/Applications-and-Permits. The Village also requires permits for temporary and special event signage such as temporary message boards.  Failure to obtain a sign permit will result in immediate sign removal, double permit fees and possible citations for zoning code violations.

Businesses are allowed (without a permit) temporary pricing or promotional signs up to 12 square feet provided there are no more than two such signs erected on a property street frontage and are located no closer than five feet to the property line. These signs must advertise a special (e.g. sale) or special event taking place at the business and not just the business name. Flag signs, pennants, or streamers are prohibited. For more information regarding signs and what is allowed and not allowed you can refer to Article IX in the Municipal Code of Ordinances.

PARKING OF VEHICLES

As a reminder, all motor vehicles that are parked outside need to be licensed, street operable and parked on an all-weather surface such as blacktop, concrete or paver blocks next to the driveway or garage. They cannot be parked on the grass, which would include vehicles that are for sale.  Inoperable or unlicensed vehicles need to be parked in a garage.  Campers, boats, and trailers, may be parked on the lawn next to your garage or driveway. Also no more than 2 recreational vehicles (including trailers) are allowed to be parked on the a property that is zoned residential

You may notice that your water has a reddish color or tint during or following the flushing. This discoloration should be eliminated shortly after you have run water through your own service line. If the discoloration persists, please contact our office.

Hydrants may be flushed on Fridays to keep up with the schedule.
