The Labyrinth

January 8, 2013

Memory, art and hell collide as an Auschwitz survivor finally confronts the horrors of his past after 50 years of silence. Polish Catholic Marian Kolodziej was on one of the first transports to enter Auschwitz. He survived five years imprisonment and never spoke of his experience again until after a serious stroke in 1993. He began physical rehabilitation by doing pen and ink drawings depicting his memories of the horrific experience at Auschwitz 50 years earlier.

Sometimes life brings someone or something into your life that enriches you. Such has been the case by my coming to know Marian Kolodziej whose story is so powerfully told in The Labyrinth.

In The Labyrinth, we not only see the drawings, but hear the words from the writings and interviews of Polish Catholic Marian Kolodziej-- his every word laced with profundity and integrity.  The documentary provides searing eyewitness testimony to the Holocaust, as it also reveals the deep human need to confront trauma and a validation that conscience and courage exist. A testament to the human spirit, the special reveals Marian Kolodziej's story of survival and persistence before, during and after Auschwitz. In it, memory, art and hell collide as the Auschwitz survivor finally confronts the horrors he has been silent about for 50 years.

Marian Kolodziej was on one of the first transports that entered Auschwitz in 1940.  He survived five horrifying years internment there, and for the next 50 years never once spoke of his experience.  After 50 years of silence and precipitated by a serious stoke in 1993, he began rehabilitation and felt compelled to create pen and ink drawings depicting his Auschwitz memories to honor other Auschwitz inmates. He produced an immense body of art, wrote about his fellow prisoners and was interviewed by the film's producers. His artwork fills the large basement of a Church near Auschwitz. Marian called the exhibit "The Labyrinth."

In The Labyrinth, Marian takes the audience on a journey into The Labyrinth. Through the blending of his testimony and graphic drawings, viewers explore the memories that were buried for years.  The Labyrinth raises many of humankind's deepest universal questions in a visually stunning way, giving testimony to the horrors of Auschwitz and providing a testament to suffering and inhumanity. It is ultimately a story of survival and human resilience.

The Labyrinth is produced by Ron Schmidt, S.J. & Jason A. Schmidt, December 2nd Productions in association with Loyola Productions Munich. The documentary is distributed to public television stations by NETA.  It is funded the Society of Jesus California Province and other small donations  (list to be provided on www.theylabyrinthdocumentary.com after 1/15/13).
