KASD Superintendent
Dear KASD Families and Friends,

During a school year, students face many challenges and expend considerable effort to do their very best work. The support and encouragement that they receive from family and friends makes a significant difference for them.  I would like to say "thank you" for the many moments of support you have given your child during the school year.

Our students are busy wrapping up their work in the classroom, staging concerts, competing in the athletic arena  and the end-of-the-year programs.  I am very proud of our students accomplishments this past school year.  Recently, I shared an end-of-the-year Superintendent's Student Message to all students,  please take the time to view the two minute video. Click here

Best wishes on a safe and enjoyable summer.

Mark Duerwaechter

Superintendent

Ground broken; project underway!
Ground was broken last week for Phase I of our upgrade of the Kaukauna High School athletic facilities. Construction has begun on a new Fitness and Weight Training Facility, Auxiliary Gym and site improvements, including a retention pond.

On Monday, May 11, 2015, the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Education reviewed the funding mechanisms and plans for Phase II (Stadium) and Phase III (Indoor Training Facility). Their recommendation to the Board of Education on June 8, 2015, will be to proceed with construction on Phase II.  Given this recommendation, a decision on Phase III would come at a later time. The whole Board needs to approve a recommendation prior to beginning the construction process.

Top 10 KHS students honored by Elks
Kaukauna High School's Top 10 students (academic ranking) were honored earlier this month by the Kaukauna Elks. We think it's great that the Elks support our students' achievement.

Back row, left to right, are KHS Principal Mike Werbowsky, Mitchell Wittmann, Riley Gulbronson, Jacob Kruchoski, Taylor Ball and Tyler VandeWettering.   Front row, left to right: Amanda Kawula, Sarah Steinke, Abby VandenBosch, Kelly Kuehl and Anna Heid.

Janelle Knick is Volunteer of the Year
KHS student Janelle Knick has been honored as Youth/Teen
Volunteer of the Year by the Heart of the Valley YMCA. The KASD Board of Education celebrated Janelle's contributions and added its congratulations on April 28.

Janelle has volunteered consistently at the Y, choosing to work with children. She anticipates a career in education. Great job, Janelle!
Honors for Park Community Charter School

Park Community Charter School has been named Wisconsin Elementary School of the Year by NEED for the fourth year in a row. NEED is the National Energy Education and Development Project.

Park Community submitted an application that summed up the work its students and staff do in their field studies with Kaukauna Utilities, including studies of solar and wind energy and hydro power. Principal Ken Kortens reports that there are plans to send two students and a staff member to the award ceremony in June in Washington, D.C.  Park Community is a KASD charter school serving K-Grade 4.
New faces in District leadership
New NDLC Principal Abbey Frischmann

Abbey Frischmann will serve as Principal of New Directions Learning Community (NDLC), taking over for retiring Principal Kim Benson. NDLC is a KASD charter school serving 4K-Grade 4.

Frischmann, whose experience includes stints at charter schools in Minocqua and Oshkosh, starts her work at NDLC July 1.

Sarah Newberry will join KASD as Director of Special Education & Pupil Services, overseeing an office that coordinates services and instruction for children with special needs as well as the

District's  school counseling, social work and health resources.

New Director of Special Education Sarah Newberry

Newberry most recently served as School Psychologist - Administrator with the Stevens Point Area Public Schools.

Sarah Newberry succeeds Michael Halstead, who retires at the end of the 2014-15 school year.

Please join us in thanking Kim Benson and Mike Halstead for their dedication, and in welcoming Abbey Frischmann and Sarah Newberry.
