District Administrator's Message

Happy New Year!

As we proceed through the month of January we continue to reflect on where we have been and where we are headed. In that spirit, we have set aside three evenings as Special Board Meetings to monitor the goals within our Strategic Plan.

The first session will take place at the District Office on Monday, January 27 as we review the goal of Maximizing Student Achievement. We will begin at 6:00, and all are welcome to attend.

Here we will share data that allows us to identify practices that have been successful in helping students achieve at high levels. Elementary, middle and high school staff members will assist with this presentation, and they will be available for questions. Successes will be celebrated and challenges identified and addressed in a way that will help us to work to continuously improve in an effort to ensure success for all students.

If you aren't able to join us for this meeting, a progress report will be posted to the District's website to provide you the opportunity to stay updated on how we are doing. Thank you, in advance, to all who will be helping to share this important information.

Sincerely,

Kathy Gwidt

Wisconsin's Winter
Take note: Potential for make-up days
We are definitely experiencing the best and worst of Wisconsin's winter. Mother Nature didn't give us much choice other than to close school on January 6 and 7 due to extreme cold temperatures and to dismiss early on January 14 to ensure students arrived home safely as winds whipped and snow fell. We do not need to make up these days yet, but further cancellations during the 2013-14 school year will mandate make-up days for students and staff. Please note that we will plan to use the March 7 Staff Development Day as a make-up day if needed. Any inclement weather days after March 7 will be made up at the end of our school year.  Let's hope for an early spring!

PLTW Biomedical Sciences
Students and Staff Featured in State Publication
The School District of New London's nationally certified Biomedical Science program was proudly represented in the Wisconsin STEM Pathways publication in its Winter 2013 issue.

Jennifer Doran and Laura Turner introduced Biomedical Sciences to New London students with their first course offering of Principles of Biomedical Sciences in the 2011-12 school year.  They have trained each summer since and have added Human Body Systems and Medical Interventions to their roster.  These efforts have provided awesome opportunity for students who wish to learn more about the possibilities of a career in the health care field.

Little Free Libraries
Service to the Community

Students in Mrs. Vantassel's Applied English class and Mr. Fuhs' Woods class are collaborating to create Little Free Libraries. They are
collecting new and gently used books of all types and for all ages to fill and restock Little Free Libraries.

What is a Little Free Library? It's a 'take a book - return a book' gathering
place where community members share their favorite literature and stories. Here people can take a book that is of interest, leave a book to share with others, or return a book they have borrowed once they are finished.

The libraries are currently being built, and they will be placed in Hatten
Park, the New London Fire Station, and the Caledonia Community Center this spring.

Please consider donating books that you are willing to share with others. They can be dropped off in Mrs. Vantassel's classroom, Mr. Fuhs' classroom, or the High School office. They will be put to very good use!
