Hello Songwriters! Watching other songwriters work on their songs can be incredibly useful. It can help you see your own songs in a different light, and can clarify the tips and tools presented by our Songwork instructors. In this week's video, you'll see Steve and Pat put Mai Bloomfield's song, "Eclipse," through its paces with all sorts of interesting results.
Song Session - Eclipse Run Time: 0:37:14 Pat Pattison Steve Seskin
Starting with Mai's gorgeous song, Pat and Steve demonstrate some of their favorite ideas, including:
- Don't leave melodic moments exactly as you discover them
- The best phrasing is almost always the way you'd say it
- If you can't say it like that, you can't sing it like that
- Match your lyric ideas with your melodic ideas
- Make the musical phrasing match the lyrical phrase
- There's power in productive repetition
- Rhyme choice and phrasing both affect the stability of a line - use them wisely
Like the other Song Sessions featuring both Steve and Pat, this video is full of brilliant ideas - plus it's a lot of fun to watch!
