Hello Songwriters!
Music theory seems to vex just about everyone when they start to learn it. So why bother? You don't need to understand music theory to write a song, you just dive in and write one, right? That may well be possible.... but Bonnie Hayes suggests two important reasons to dig into some music theory:
-
Knowing at least a little music theory gives you a language to discuss your music with other musicians
-
Understanding even basic music theory can help you identify and break free from musical habits that might be causing you to fall into the dreaded AMSSS (All-My-Songs-Sound-the-Same) trap.
In order to make the learning process easy, Bonnie has made a series of short (5-10 minute) videos about music theory. Each topic is broken up into bite sized pieces, so whether you just want to brush up on the wonder of the "Magic Chords" or are ready to understand the basics, these videos are for you. If you get confused or need to review something, you can easily stop, go back, and clarify what you may have missed. So pick up your guitar or sit down in front of your piano and dive in. Bonnie's waiting for you.
