Hello Songwriters!
Whether you're a beginning or a seasoned songwriter, teasing out what goes where in a song (and why) is a process that affects every song. Even with a toolbox full of songwriting techniques and ideas, and a solid grasp of song structure, it can be hard to suss out what techniques can be applied to make the most of a given song.
Several Songwork videos talk through tools or techniques in a conversational way that can help develop an even deeper understanding and mastery of concepts. These videos don't necessarily present new material, but do offer a nuanced look at how different songwriting techniques connect with and complement each other.
Sections of Songs (0:27:51)
Steve Seskin and Bonnie Hayes
This video addresses dilemmas such as, "Is this a chorus or pre-chorus?" It touches on nuances such as when to resolve, when to hold back, when to use iconic images in the chorus or specific images in the verse.
Point of View with Pat Pattison:1st Person Narrative, Direct Address & More (0:28:11)
Pat Pattison
The song's material may guide which of four points of view to use (Direct Address, 1st Person Narrative, 2nd Person Narrative, and 3rd Person Narrative). On the other hand, shifting the song's point of view may unlock a stuck creative process.
Finding the Right Angle for Verses: Specific vs. General (0:16:18)
Steve Seskin
The concept "show, don't tell" is certainly well established, but in this video, Steve considers situations where a general, philosophic verse ("telling") might work better than a clear concrete image ("showing"). He gives some good concrete examples.
Enjoy!
Warm regards,
Diana
