Happy April!

We hope you and your family had an enjoyable Spring Break! April is already shaping up to be an active month here at Belle View. Our track season is in full swing, we will be having a garden clean up day this coming Saturday, the Scholastic book fair is back this month, and we have an exciting cultural arts presentation called Under the Sea later in the month courtesy of our incredible PTA.

Next month begins the main testing season for Fairfax County Public Schools. The Standards of Learning (SOL) tests will be given May 13th through June 7th. Students in Grades 3-6 in our school will be taking these assessments. This year all of your SOL tests will be administered on-line. It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school during this time period. Also, it will help your child perform his or her best if he or she has had a good night's rest, a healthy breakfast, and comes to school with a positive attitude.

The SOLs measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills specified in the Virginia Standards of Learning. Content areas include writing,
reading, mathematics, history/social science, and science.

The purpose of the testing is to provide information about student achievement in several subject areas. Scores from the tests will be used to determine whether students fail to meet standards, are proficient in meeting the standards, or advanced in the standards. All parents will receive their child's SOL scores in late August.

Sincerely,

Thomas Kuntz               Katie Pluntke

April is Gardening Month at Belle View!

Now that the weather is warming, the Outdoor Classroom Committee is making plans to get our school yard in shape for classroom/student use.

Our first event will be on Saturday, April 6 when we ask families and staff to turn out for a clean-up day. The focus on that day is putting soil into the new vegetable beds and getting the other gardens in shape after a long winter's rest. We will have tasks for every age and the children are always welcome to play on the playground.

GARDEN CLEAN UP DAY DETAILS:

Saturday April 6 from 8 a.m. to noon

Meet in the school vegetable garden next to the playground.

Bring shovels, wheelbarrows, pruners and gloves!

Later in the month we are planning an Earth Week at Belle View. It will begin on April 22 (Earth Day) with a tree planting ceremony, continue through the week with outdoor activities and finish up with an art show and movie night on April 26. Please plan to attend and join in by helping your child make garden themed or recycled art for our show.

Watch your child's Wednesday folder for more specific information.

NEW LOST & FOUND

There are two new stations for lost and found items. This new set up makes it much easier to find what you are looking for. Please be sure to check them for coats, lunch boxes, etc. They are still located outside the cafeteria.

The new lost and found stations were donated by a previous Belle View family. There are two of these outside the cafeteria. Thank you for contributing to our school.
