IT'S A SAD TRUTH...
Diminishing access to affordable housing remains a dire problem in the District of Columbia. Hundreds of  low-income residents live on the brink of homelessness--facing deplorable housing conditions, illegally increased rents, or the imminent risk of eviction.
ON TOP OF THAT, DID YOU KNOW...
65 percent of the residents we see are women, often with incomes well below the federal poverty level? Many are heads of households with dependent young children or extended families.  And many have the nearly impossible task of taking on well-represented landlords, incentivized by gentrification to push low-income tenants out of their homes.  (Donate)
THIS IS WHERE LSIC STEPS IN...
BY THE TIME LSIC MET CLIENT X, she and her family were living in a shelter after vacating their apartment through an agreement with her landlord. Like many low-income DC residents, our client wanted to avoid a record of an eviction on her credit history and the termination of her Housing Choice Voucher. Despite her compliance, this spiteful landlord applied for a writ of restitution to evict the family from the building. Through an adept limited appearance, LSIC student attorneys filed a motion to vacate judgment and quash the writ of restitution. The judge granted the motion, thereby preserving the family's subsidy.
LSIC NEGOTIATIONS BRING POSITIVE OUTCOMES...
Brief legal services for an average of 7 low-income tenants each day + long-term representation for 327 clients. LSIC student-attorneys helped to keep 3,000+ District residents in their affordable homes and negotiated numerous settlement agreements on behalf of clients living in dilapidated buildings. (Donate)
