Greetings!

Here in Finger Lakes Wine Country the New York Wine & Grape Foundation hosts the New York Wine and Food Classic, the Oscars in wine competitions. The winery to win the most awards at the competition is the winner of the acclaimed Governor's Cup (the Oscar). Back in 2010 Swedish Hill Winery took that honor and Sheldrake Point Winery received the second highest award "Winery of the Year".  This competition is held every year in August, I wonder who will bring home the Governor's Cup this year.

 See you along the trail!

 Cayuga Cathy

Swedish Hill Winery

Swedish Hill Winery, owned and operated by the Peterson Family, is located SH Barn on State Route 414 on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail with two additional satellite tasting rooms in Saratoga Springs and Lake Placid. Dave Peterson, co-owner states, " Having been a Cayuga Lake Wine Trail member for over 25 years, it still amazes me when I look back at what each of the wineries was like when we started and how each of us has evolved over the decades. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail has been an important partner in the growth of our winery, and the tremendous surge in high quality wines made by member wineries also has been fueled by the cooperative relationship we have with each other."

The winery is known as one of the most award-winning wineries in the Finger Lakes winning 61 gold medals in 2012 in addition to being named "Winery of the Year" at California's Riverside International Wine Competition.

Additionally they were awarded "Top Winery" at the Commercial New York State Fair Wine Competition on July 17th, along with four gold medals from these wines, 2012 Blue Waters Chardonnay Riesling, 2012 Cayuga White, Viking Red and Classic Concord.

SH wines As more 2012 vintages are being entered in upcoming competitions, Swedish Hill Winery is confident that they will continue to maintain their successful reputation. In June it was announced that the winery had claimed three more gold medals at the recent San Francisco International Wine Competition, including the top honor of "Best Red Hybrid Varietal." The San Francisco International Wine Competition is regarded as the largest, most influential and most respected wine competitions in the country. This was the competition's 33rd year and judged over 4,500 different wines from around the nation.

The winning wines for Swedish Hill Winery included the sparkling Spumante Blush, the 2010 Late Harvest Vignoles and the 2011 Maréchal Foch. The Spumante Blush was awarded a Double Gold medal, its third gold medal so far. A gold medal was awarded to the 2010 Late Harvest Vignoles, now totaling an impressive 13 gold medals. The 2011 Maréchal Foch was honored with "Best Red Hybrid Varietal," beginning, what could be, a very successful run at upcoming wine competitions.

This month Swedish Hill commemorates a day to celebrate one of their SH Doobie most beloved family members, Doobie their donkey, at their Jack Ass event on August 10th. Enjoy this lively event and boogie on down to live music by the "City Limits", while enjoying BBQ foods. Try your luck at some of their fun games and take advantage of huge sales.

Sheldrake Point Winery

Sheldrake Point Winery, a proud member of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Shedrake located on County Rd. 153 in Ovid includes an artisan gift shop  along with their tasting room and is also accessible by water. Visitors with boats up to 35 feet in length are welcome to tie up at any one of their eight dock spaces. Their 400 foot beach has absolutely picturesque lake views and is a short distance walk to their tasting room. Chuck Tauck owner of Sheldrake Point Winery  states, " Cayuga Lake offers so much scenic and recreational variety and is a powerful magnet for visitors far and wide. With its outreach and events, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail has a truly effective program that links the lake's wineries to not only locals, but to visitors from around the world."

Shel Awards Among the highlights of the past year, Wine and Spirits Magazine again named Sheldrake Point Winery a Top Value Brand. Sheldrake Point earned this recognition in 2009, 2010 and 2012. "Sheldrake Point Winery consistently produces wines that offer quality and value; great taste for a great price, says Bob Madill, winegrower and general manager at Sheldrake Point Winery.

Earlier this year, Sheldrake Point Riesling Ice Wine was awarded 91 points by magazines Wine Enthusiast and 92 points by Wine Spectator. This was also the first year Wine Spectator printed a formal tasting report on the Finger Lakes, written by James Molesworth. James wrote, "Vintners in New York's emergent Finger Lakes region have found a formula for success, based largely on Riesling, and they're gaining experience quickly." For the tasting report, James reviewed nearly 150 Rieslings referring Sheldrake Point as one of the "leading wineries."

"Sheldrake Point Winery's superb site provides us with an exceptional  Shel Bob opportunity to grow Riesling grapes that showcase Finger Lakes character," explains Bob. "This translates into fine regionally specific wines with personality."
