Going To Market
Event promises chef demos, vendors and more

The High Meadows Fifth Annual Famer's Market is this weekend, on Saturday, March 28, from 10am - 2pm! This highly anticipated event will, as it does every year, draw large crowds to the High Meadows campus, and this year's market is shaping up to be our best ever.

Vendors will begin selling their wares at 10:00am, with the first event, sheep shearing, kicking off at 10:30. At 11, Dana Tribble with Tribble Farms will be conducting a "How To Cook With Honey" chef demo. An hour later, Whole Foods' chef Ray Craft will be making Mu Shu vegetables with coconut milk crepes. Finally, at 1:00, Liz Porter with Buckeye Creek will be doing "The Ultimate Grits Demo" with shrimp & grits and more.

In addition to all this, we will have Wholesome Tummies, Palacsinta Crepes, and S & J's Woodfired Pizza selling food throughout the day.

We hope to see you on Saturday!

Mixing Minecraft, Music
Teachers test incorporating game into lessons

If you know a child between the ages of 6-21, chances are you've heard them talking about Minecraft. The bewilderingly popular multiplayer construction video game is all the rage right now, and Music Teachers Paula Williams and Patrick Wright are exploring the use of the game as a teaching tool.

The call for a "Minecraft meet-up" went out and no fewer than 50 High Meadows students arrived on campus early to play with their friends in the first session. The second session's numbers were equally impressive. In addition to the normal Minecraft activities like structure building and combat, the kids were tasked with building musical notes in the game's virtual world. Unsurprisingly, the students ran with the project and in mere minutes had entire bars of music built in their virtual worlds.

Using Minecraft as a teaching tool is a relatively new concept, but if anyone can make it work, High Meadows teachers can!

Exploring A Theme
Connections tackle Emphasis theme

With Emphasis Night only a week away, on Thursday, April 2, we wanted to take a look at what some of the Connections classes are doing with this year's theme, "Oh, The Places You'll Go!"

Environmental Education is looking at "the places we can go" right here in Georgia. The kindergarten through 5th grade classes are learning about the beaches and islands of coastal Georgia and the wildlife that calls them home.

The art classes are looking at "the places you've been." Students are discussing the famous museums they've visited and the locations of various well-known pieces, such as Van Gogh's Starry Night.

With Emphasis Night only a week away, make sure to watch The Tire Swing for more in the next issue!

Earth Day 2015
Celebration coming April 24

As the hope of spring grows stronger, Earth Day planning is underway! Plan now to be part of this hands-on, meaningful event celebrating how our student's curriculum teaches them to be responsible stewards of our natural world. On Friday, April 24, from 9:00-12:00, you will have the opportunity to teach, learn, and experience what it means to live sustainably through the eyes of your child.

You can find out about volunteer opportunities by contacting your child's classroom teachers, parent volunteer, or Education teacher Michelle Griffin at [email protected] as soon as possible to express your interest in volunteering!

Lepus Learning & Jazz
Rabbit rescue shows off some seriously big bunnies; a new goat joins the family

In a special treat for some of our youngest students, two rabbit rescue groups visited the Barn Theatre on two consecutive Wednesdays and brought along plenty of friends. The preschool, kindergarten and 1/2 classes were all invited to learn about the various species of rabbit, and the excitement in the room was palpable.
Rabbit handler Jason shows off one of the world's largest species of rabbit.
In other High Meadows animal news, our campus is now home to a brand new Miniature Nigerian goat named Jazz.

Rescued just this past weekend, Jazz will be in "quarantine" to give her time to adjust to her new home. This will also give Bunny and Jody time to accept their new "roommate." You can expect Jazz to become a beloved member of our animal community over the coming weeks and months, once she is adjusted to her new home.

For Your Health
Sarah Bobbitt Shares Some Special Treats

I like to have "treats" around that fulfill the sweet need without making me feel like I am indulging too frequently. I also try to add fruits or veggies when possible to get them in where I can! These are all recipes that my daughter helps me make and that I feel comfortable letting her have on a regular or semi-regular basis. On occasion we enjoy more traditional goodies because I am not a believer in anyone missing out on things!
