Students write, perform new endings for Shakespeare's plays
Earlier this year, The Tire Swing featured a story about High Meadows students directing, producing and acting out one of Shakespeare's plays, Twelfth Night. Mere months later, the Barn Theatre has been given another dose of Shakespeare as five original takes on the endings of a few of the bard's works were performed by an extremely talented group of students. The result? A set of five wholly unique productions that impressed all in attendance.

From left, Katie Jewett and Allison Cruthfield (background), Maren Finnegan (on stool) and Caroline McQueen (floor) perform in one of the five plays.
|
These five unique plays were completely acted, directed and written by students, often with hilarious results. Premises ranged from new endings to existing plays, to a particularly funny retelling as viewed through the lens of a teacher instructing students on a particular play (see above photo; Maren Finnegan was especially excellent as the teacher).

Second grade Spanish students learn flamenco
Last week, our second grade Spanish students were treated to a very special lesson by Spanish teacher Xiomara Burrell and after school dance teacher Janelle Selembo - they were taught how to flamenco! Have a look at the routine!
Notice anyone else in the video? Middle years teacher Andy Stephens, along with eighth graders David Armstrong and Ethan Wedge, accompanied the kids on guitar. Second graders learning traditional Latin dance? Just another day at High Meadows School!

Anticipation high for upcoming book fair
The High Meadows Book Fair is right around the corner - March 9 - 13 - and after last year's partnership with Through the Magic Door, we are looking forward to another great event!

Our goal is to create a commercial-free, gimmick-free environment that values quality of books over quantity of books. We, at High Meadows, understand the importance of fostering a love of reading and the book fair reflects these values. Instead of a highly marketed event focused on sales, we want the focus to be on literacy and the love of books. One of the many advantages of working with this vendor is having an onsite book curator who can answer questions about the titles and make recommendations based on the reading level and interest of your child. Parents who stopped by to chat with the Through the Magic Door owner last year were universally pleased with the service and the level of knowledge.
Book Fair will be held in the library as we see involvement from our librarians a must-have (Before last year, the book fairs did not involve the library at all). All classes will rotate through the book fair during the school day (schedule will be forthcoming). Parents can shop at any point during the week. We will be open in tandem with Art Night on Wed, March 11 (Come to see the art ... buy a book afterward!). We will also be open on conference days, Thursday and Friday, of that week.
You can visit the Through the Magic Door website at ttmd.com or by clicking here.

Health picture books to get little minds thinking
Sarah Bobbitt
Early Years Teacher
I am always looking for books that elicit conversation about important or interesting topics for use at home and in the classroom. Here is my short list of health related books that make great conversation starters. They are all picture books, but some have been read to children ages 2-13. Who doesn't love a good story with fun pictures?

Camp Director John Dovic receives ACA Award
It's no secret that High Meadows is the best summer camp in the Atlanta area, and our longtime camp director, John Dovic, was recently honored by the American Camp Association (ACA) for all his hard work.

Camps Director John Dovic receives the National ACA Service Award for 2014.
|
Mr. Dovic received an ACA Southeastern Region service award earlier this year, and this most recent honor, the National ACA Service Award was a nod from the greater organization. Congrats go to Mr. Dovic and we hope he keeps up the great (and award winning) work!
