New Steps to Advance Equal Pay
7th Anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

President Obama chose today, the seventh anniversary of his signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, to announce new steps to reportedly advance equal pay in America's workplaces. "Policies that ensure fair pay for all Americans and that help businesses to attract the strongest talent can not only narrow the pay gap, but also boost productivity and benefit our economy." The White House is taking several measures aimed at narrowing the pay gap:
  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), in partnership with the Department of Labor, is publishing a proposal to annually collect summary pay data by gender, race and ethnicity from businesses with 100 employees or more. This replaces the earlier proposal for the Department of Labor to collect similar information from Federal contractors. Under this proposal, employers would be required to submit their first pay data as of next year's EEO-1 filing deadline (September 30, 2017).
  • The President is calling upon the U.S. Congress to take up and pass the Paycheck Fairness Act which, among other things, would replace "any factor other than sex" in the Equal Pay Act (EPA) with "a bona fide factor other than sex."
  • The White House's Council of Economic Advisors is releasing an issue brief, "The Gender Pay Gap on the Anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act" which explores the factors that influence compensation differentials and public policies in the U.S. and abroad.
  • A White House Summit on "The United State of Women" on May 23rd with the Department of State, the Department of Labor, the Aspen Institute and Civic Nation
