With temperatures dipping lower as we march deeper into Winter, and a polar vortex once again threatening the northeast, now more than ever it's important to employ warm, thoughtful layering. Luckily, layering is still as hot as the days are cold, with sites like Glamour providing some easy tips on how best to accomplish the layered look.

Layering isn't just about piling on bulky clothing to keep warm--the best layering requires a touch of finesse, and a keener view of your wardrobe. Some of the best layers are accomplished by selecting a number of thin layers, as showcased by Claudia Schiffer in Harpers Bazaar. It's all about thinking outside your usual silhouette, whether you're piling a cropped, cozy grey sweater over a peplum top and skirt, as seen on the Marni FW 2014 runway (above left), or wearing a tissue-thin tee under a cropped, sleeveless top like the Pier Hi-Lo Vest in GIOIELLO & NIRVANA (seen above right). Worked while holding a strand of each yarn, the Pier Hi-Lo Vest is knit side-to-side to maintain a figure-flattering shape, accentuated by rising columns of lace rows at the front--so lovingly reminiscent of our NYC skyscrapers. GIOIELLO's mohair-metallic blend adds a touch of soft sparkle to the overall knit, while extrafine merino wool NIRVANA provides a delicate buoyancy and sharp stitch definition. The Pier Hi-Low Vest is a fabulous addition to your layering repertoire--it works wonderfully over a casual tissue tee as seen above, but it can also be dressed up over a dress and knee-high boots.

GIOIELLO, NIRVANA, & SUPERIOR
We all know NIRVANA & SUPERIOR are the best of friends (have you seen their numerous pattern and pattern collection collaborations?), but did you know that
NIRVANA gets along swimmingly with GIOIELLO as well? But really, what yarn wouldn't get along with NIRVANA--available in 49 gorgeous hues, it's difficult not to find a friendly hue, and GIOIELLO's mohair/metallic/merino blend in 17 multicolor colorways pairs naturally with it--just pick a color and go for it! Think of it as the first step in your layering, but with yarns. When held together, GIOIELLO and NIRVANA easily upsize your knitting to working on a US size 7 needle (from a US size 3 or US size 1-2 needle, respectively). And with Winter fast approaching, the more the merrier--add in cashmere/silk blend SUPERIOR for an extra touch of softness and go up a needle size!

Nadia Top-Down Pullover in GIOIELLO
Adding a little holiday glitter to your knitted ensembles is easy with GIOIELLO. Garments like the Nadia Top-Down Pullover (above) offer an easy grace and flattering details. Subtle lace framed in a wide boatneck draws attention to the decolletage, and is mirrored in the hems. The Pantheon Pullover and Navona Jacket (below, left to right), both in GIOIELLO & NIRVANA, are no-brainer wardrobe additions. Both deceptively fast knits (with the Pantheon Pullover worked on US size 9 needles and the Navona Jacket worked on US size 11 needles), they fit in perfectly with the layering trend while remaining timelessly chic. The Pantheon Pullover's delicately scooped neckline finds a concave partner in the bottom hem, creating the illusion of a slimmer waistline and drawing attention to the face. The Navona Jacket features widely-striped eyelets and ribbed front bands that gently fold around the neck for a contrast of textures.

The Pier Triangle Scarf is knit using 2 balls of GIOIELLO and 1 ball of NIRVANA. A great transitional accessory, it will be as wearable in the Spring as it is this Winter. Knit it as a gift for yourself or someone else, and bear in mind that it utilizes many of the same stylistic and design techniques as seen in the above Pier Hi-Lo Vest. It's a great trial-run for knitters still too bogged down in gift knitting to start a more intensive project.
