(L-R) Laura Biagiotti FW2014, Silvana Cowl in COMETA & ZARA 14

We needn't remind you that gift-giving holidays are slowly trickling closer--we know that many of you, like that bearded man in red, are checking people off your list with finished gifts of cowls, socks, scarves, and other knits. If you're stuck making the same hat for several different people, knitting itself can grow tiresome--the best solution might be a different approach to your yarn. Spice up your classic yarns with textural fibers for something a touch more unique. Let the yarn do all the interesting work for you.

The streets of New York have been abuzz with all sorts of interesting neckwear. Yes, there's nothing that can replace the oversized, loopy garter cowl--reigning queen of popularity in season's past--but a new look has been popping up as of late that is far more experimental and texturally intriguing. Like the fluffy fur cowl seen in various color incarnations on the Laura Biagiotti Fall runway (above, left), a big, bold statement cowl is in high demand this season. Whether you love the feel of a faux fur, desire the cuddly comfort of an oversized cowl, or love a mixture of texture and color, this season demands a cowl that says more than last year's yawning loop of garter ridges. The Silvana Cowl (above, right) is an interesting take on this season's 'go bold' cowl trend. While the majority of the cowl is knit in nothing more than ribbing and stockinette, the use of COMETA, a bulky wool-blend with tufts of wooly color popping up throughout the yarn, elevates the cowl above the familiar. With a slight faux-fur look (especially in a natural colorway), COMETA lends chicness and sophistication to the Silvana Cowl, supported by a dcolletage-hugging base of ZARA 14 ribbing. For another great addition to this year's "go big or go home" cowl trend, check out the free pattern at the bottom of this newsletter.

Filatura di Crosa is well-known for having the most sophisticated fun and funky yarns. When it comes to fun and funky, some yarns go overboard. Fortunately for FDC, we know how to rein in textural flamboyance so that it translates as fashion-forward, and not fashion victim.
COMETA, a super bulky-weight, wool-blend boucle, features wooly tufts of coordinating color that rise from the knitting--COMETA literally translates to comet, so think of these orbs as thoughtful bursts of color streaking through your knitting. GALAXY, a worsted-weight mohair-blend, features a metallic strand strung with iridescent, shimmering sequins, softened by a halo of gorgeous mohair. While perhaps inspired by outer space, GALAXY is perfect for wintry knits, adding a delightful holiday sparkle that mimics the look of tree lights and glistening snow.
Fashions in COMETA & GALAXY

COMETA and ZARA 14 go hand in hand, which is something to keep in mind when planning your COMETA projects. Each COMETA colorway matches up with ZARA 14's existing colorways--could we make it any easier? The Liliana Scarf in COMETA and ZARA 14 (above left) plays up COMETA's furry quality by striping it between stockinette rows of ZARA 14. In the Luisa Hat (above right) COMETA takes center stage, with freedom given to the furry fluffs of wool to rise from the stockinette, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind fabric.
Because it feels and looks so glamorous, even simple garments and accessories find new life when knit in GALAXY. Rina Ruana (below, left) is a deceptively simple wrap that can double as a vest or cape when the fronts are tied together. Composed of double wrapped stitches which are crossed and dropped, creating airier sections, Rina Ruana is a stunning Winter accessory garment, perfect for layering. The Dina Shawl (below, right) truly lets GALAXY's gorgeous texture shine. Easy lace sections composed of yarn overs and decreases abut plain stockinette rows. Knit on larger needles, the Dina Shawl can be knit up fairly quickly, making it an excellent, not-so-last-minute (as in, cast on right now!) gift.

The Carmela Cowl in COMETA is another fantastic cowl that fulfills the recent big, bold neckwear trend--it's also a fantastic last minute holiday gift!

Knit on size US 15 needles, the Carmela Cowl is a really fast knit. It's also reversible (alternate views can be seen in the pdf download)--wear it as shown to highlight the gorgeous texture of COMETA in stockinette, or reverse it to showcase the pebbly nature of the purl side against the "pebbles" of bold, blooming wool!
