DELIVERING PAIN MANAGEMENT SERVICES TO RURAL AMERICA:
Spotlight on AmkaiSolutions partner
Covenant Community Pain Solutions
| |
Written by Kathy Allison, MHA, BSN, Covenant Community Pain Solutions
Covenant Community Pain Solutions (CCPS) brings interventional pain management to community hospitals, allowing trained physicians to provide interventional pain management procedures to people experiencing chronic lower back and leg pain in the rural hospital out-patient setting. There are many folks in outlying communities that suffer from chronic lower back and leg pain who may not be able, or willing, to travel into large cities for treatment. Treating patients in their hometown, at their community hospital, by physicians they know, has been a positive experience for the local populations and for the serving facilities and physicians.
CCPS chose AmkaiSolutions for our pain program's electronic medical record (EMR) because of the good experience our parent company, Covenant Surgical Partners, has enjoyed with AmkaiSolutions. Its thin client enterprise architecture allows for deployment at the community hospital with the data securely hosted and maintained at the data center maximizing uptime. The nurses and physicians in our community pain settings have shared with us how much easier Amkai is to work with compared with other EMRs they have used. CCPS is delighted that the use of AmkaiSolutions products for our pain programs will allow us to benchmark against best practices, analyze variations from site to site, allowing our organization to constantly improve on the care we oversee, and stay abreast of the outcomes of our community constituents.
A certified registered nurse anesthetist who works with us, but also travels and works on myriad of other EMRs, said "I was very impressed with AmkaiSolutions EMR and was starting to get much more comfortable after just a few cases."

Keys to a Successful EMR Integration
| |
Written by Joe Macies, CEO, AmkaiSolutions
More and more ASCs are making the switch to an electronic medical records (EMR) system because an EMR offers a significant improvement over paper records in all areas of an ASC's operation, and provides numerous benefits to patients, physicians and staff. But there is a common misconception about investing in an EMR which assumes that once you purchase the software and install it, you're ready to go.
Integration of an EMR goes well beyond that, which is part of the reason it brings such significant improvements over the use of paper records. The advantages are even greater for those ASCs that put time and effort into the EMR transition process. Clients have repeatedly told us that preparation, teamwork and a facility-wide commitment to making the switch helped ensure a smooth integration and allowed them to reap even more benefits of using an electronic-based records system than they expected.
We like to make sure ASCs considering making the switch are aware of what is involved in the EMR integration process so they can ensure their facility is well prepared. It is particularly helpful to understand the three stages an ASC goes through during the EMR transition: before, during and after integration. A firm understanding of what is involved in each of the stages will make the integration of the system a seamless transition.
In this first part in a three-part series, we will discuss the first stage, which is the time leading up to installation of the EMR software and the period when the ASC prepares the facility and its staff for the technology upgrade. There are 10 steps your ASC will want to take during this first stage to maximize the system's long-term effectiveness.
Click here to review the complete article, the first in a three-part series written for Beckers ASC Review. The series explores the different stages an ambulatory surgery center goes through when switching to EMR. Parts two and three will appear in the November/December issue of Becker's ASC Review and on the Becker's ASC Review website.
