Accreditation Workshops Announced for 2016

JANUARY 7 & 8 in ORLANDO

JUNE 16 & 17 in LOUISVILLE

DECEMBER 1 & 2 in DALLAS

CoAEMSP is pleased to announce it will be hosting three accreditation workshops in 2016. They will focus on the new 2015 CAAHEP Standards and the new Self Study Report templates.

This workshop is a must for new program directors as well as seasoned program directors!

Because all programs will be transitioning to the new Self Study Reports (SSRs), and more than 200 LoR programs will be going through the accreditation process for the first time, these workshops will serve as an invaluable resource. Make plans to attend one of these three workshops in 2016!

Response to Findings Letters & Progress Reports Due Dec. 1
..........................................................................
Staff Contact: Karen Franks, karen@coaemsp.org; 214-703-8445, x111
..........................................................................

Do you have a progress report due December 1? Have you recently hosted a site visit and have a response to the site visit findings due December 1?

Be sure to submit it as a single PDF document to Karen (karen@coaemsp.org) on or before December 1 to prevent a recommendation for probation or a withhold of accreditation.

The CoAEMSP Board of Directors is charged with reviewing the accreditation records of nearly 100 programs. That means the documentation you have submitted for ONE program is multiplied many times! The staff person receiving the programs' submissions must also collate them for dissemination to the Board. This is a huge task, and we need to be sure we are as efficient and accurate as possible. To ensure ALL of the documentation is received and reviewed, programs MUST:
  • submit a single PDF document
  • submit documentation on time
  • NOT submit embedded documents
  • NOT submit external links
Failure to submit the document as a single PDF document or eliminate all links and embedded files will delay the review of the program's accreditation record. The CoAEMSP Board has found it necessary to take a hard stance on reports submitted after the deadline, in multiple files, or in the wrong format. When reports or responses are not submitted according to the above requirements, they will be considered as "not received" and the Board will NOT review the material; but will continue to make a decision on the program.

Click HERE for tips on HOW to create a single PDF.
Wanted! Great EMS Education Photos
CAAHEP is re-designing its website and Hub, and wants to include photos of educational
programs in the classroom, lab, or field. Submissions may also be used by the CoAEMSP in communication materials. Acceptable file formats are bmp, gif, png, jpg, jpeg, tiff, and tif; jpeg is preferred. A completed Photo Release Form for each person shown in all photos needs to accompany the photos. Send photos and Photo Release Forms to jennifer@coaemsp.org. Thank you!
CAAHEP Requires Publication of Outcomes Results
............................................................................................................................................
Staff Contact: gordy@coaemsp.org; (214) 703-8445 x117
............................................................................................................................................

In January 2015, CAAHEP made a change to Standard V.A.4 in the accreditation standards for all its professions. The language in the CAAHEP Standards for the EMS Professions now states:

V. Fair Practices
A. Publications and Disclosure
4.  The sponsor must maintain, and make available to the public current and consistent summary information about student/graduate achievement that includes the results of one or more of the outcomes assessments required in these Standards.

Guideline: The sponsor should develop a suitable means of communicating to the communities of interest the achievement of students/graduates (e.g. through a website or electronic or printed documents).

For programs to be in compliance with the new Standard, CoAEMSP adopted the following policy:

All programs must publish, preferably in a readily accessible place on their websites, the 3-year review-window average results of the outcomes for: National Registry (or State, as applicable) Written and Practical Exams, Retention, and Positive Placement.

At all times, the published results must be consistent with and verifiable by the online Annual Report of the program.

Each year in the Comments tab of the Annual Report, the program must state the website link (or other publication) where its results are published.

The publication of the outcomes results must be completed no later than December 31, 2015 and the link must be included in the 2015 Annual Report.

Based on the date of your accreditation, if you do not yet have outcomes data for ALL necessary graduate years (graduates in 2012+2013+2014), you do not have the "3-year review window average results;" therefore, the CoAEMSP policy does not yet apply.
Advanced Placement Questionnaire Deadline
is December 1, 2015
............................................................................................................................................
Staff Contact: jennifer@coaemsp.org; (214) 703-8445 x114
............................................................................................................................................

On September 25 the program director of each CAAHEP accredited and CoAEMSP Letter of Review Paramedic program received an email from jennifer@coaemsp.org requesting they complete the Advanced Placement Questionnaire. If you are a program director and did not receive that email, check your quarantine, junk and spam folders. If you do not have the questionnaire in any of those, email jennifer@coaemsp.org.

According to the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in the Emergency Medical Services Professions (Standard V.A.2.), all programs must have a policy on advanced placement, transfer of credits, and credits for experiential learning.

Advanced placement is any process where a program formally recognizes prior learning of a student and applies that recognition toward meeting the program requirements. Advanced placement is applied on a case-by-case basis and allows a student to "place out" of specified program didactic, laboratory, clinical, or field requirements. This may shorten the time for completion of the program and is often thought of as an alternative pathway to program completion and eligibility for the National Registry or state examination at the paramedic level. These types of students often include physicians, registered nurses, out-of-state paramedics, and non-CAAHEP paramedic graduates who are seeking eligibility to sit for the paramedic examination.

All students completing the program must demonstrate they have met ALL program requirements. Therefore, documentation of any student completing via an advanced placement policy must show how all of the program minimum didactic, laboratory, clinical and field requirements have been achieved through this process. All students, including those in advanced placement, completing the program are considered graduates and must be incorporated in all outcomes reporting.

CoAEMSP is beginning a formal review of programs' use of advanced placement and compliance with Standard V.A.2. Completing this questionnaire is REQUIRED of all programs.

The deadline is December 1, 2015.
Reference Your CoAEMSP Program Number When Contacting Us!
When you contact the CoAEMSP via email or telephone, reference your CoAEMSP Program Number, which will begin with 600xxx. Almost 800 programs are either seeking or maintaining accreditation. Many programs have similar names and in come cases, the names are the same!

The Program Number prevents potential problems and ensures the CoAEMSP staff is answering questions based on the correct program.
Request for Approval of a Satellite Location is Necessary For EACH Cohort!
.........................................................................................................................................
Staff Contact: lynn@coaemsp.org; (214) 703-8445 x115
.........................................................................................................................................

Do you offer an off-campus location of the Paramedic program where students can complete the laboratory (or similar hands-on skills) professional course(s) without attending the main campus? Are you planning to add a satellite campus? Do you have approval from the CoAEMSP to conduct the cohort of students?

This completed request form must be submitted, in advance, for each class for each satellite location.

CoAEMSP verifies directly with the NREMT, the eligibility of graduates from each satellite location. Failure to obtain prior CoAEMSP approval may result in the graduates from the location/class not being eligible for the national examinations for the Paramedic.

Questions about this form and about the approval process may be directed to Lynn Caruthers at 214-703-8445, ext 115 or lynn@coaemsp.org.

Complete the Request for Approval form.

What is a Program Satellite? Off-campus location(s) that are advertised or otherwise made known to individuals outside the sponsor where students can complete the laboratory (or similar hands-on skills) professional course(s) without attending the main campus. A satellite does not pertain to sites used by a completely on-line/distance education program for individual students. Satellite(s) are included in the CAAHEP accreditation of the sponsor and function under the direction of the Key Personnel of the program. [Policy IX.3]
