Why You Need to Know About CAAHEP
CAAHEP Logo

Do you refer to your accredited Paramedic program as CoAEMSP accredited? If you answer 'yes' to this question, you are incorrect! Why? Because the CoAEMSP operates under the auspices of CAAHEP; CAAHEP is the ONLY accreditor of Paramedic programs.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is a programmatic post-secondary accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and carries out its accrediting activities in cooperation with 21 review committees (Committees on Accreditation). CAAHEP currently accredits over 2100 entry level education programs in 26 health science professions.

CAAHEP, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, was formed in 1994. Its predecessor organization was the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA). CAHEA was part of the American Medical Association (AMA).

CAAHEP is comprised of both a Commission and a Board of Directors. The Commission is composed of representatives appointed to represent the organizations that belong to CAAHEP as well as certain other "communities of interest." These Commissioners are responsible for approving the bylaws, mission, and vision statements of CAAHEP, as well as determining which health sciences professions are to be recognized by CAAHEP.

The CAAHEP Board of Directors is composed of 16 members, who are elected by and from among the Commissioners. The Board is the accrediting body of CAAHEP that awards or denies accreditation after review of accreditation recommendations made by the Committees on Accreditation. It is also the primary governing body that oversees the business of CAAHEP and implements the mission and vision as adopted by the Commission.

Quality - that is the mission of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Quality is what CAAHEP is all about. As each individual program is reviewed, CAAHEP stays focused on each profession's Standards and quality outcomes to assure that every CAAHEP accredited program is preparing students to be successful as they enter their chosen health care field.

CAAHEP currently accredits programs in the following professions: Anesthesiologist Assistant; Cardiovascular Technologist; Cytotechnologist; Diagnostic Medical Sonographer; Emergency Medical Services Personnel; Exercise Physiologist (Clinical & Applied); Exercise Science Professional; Kinesiotherapist; Medical Assistant; Medical Illustrator; Neurodiagnostic Technologist; Orthotist and Prosthetist; Perfusionist; Personal Fitness Trainer; Polysomnographic Technologist; Recreational Therapist; Specialist in Blood Banking Technology; Surgical Assistant; and, Surgical Technologist. CAAHEP is working toward accrediting programs in the following professions: Advanced Cardiovascular Sonographer; Anesthesia Technologist; Art Therapy; Assistive Technology Professionals; Clinical Research Professional; Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring; Lactation Consultant; Medical Scribe Specialists; and Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician.

.......................................................................

Do you have a progress report due March 1? Have you recently hosted a site visit and have a response to the site visit findings due December 1? If yes, be sure to submit it no later than March 1 to prevent a recommendation for probation or withhold of accreditation.

Programs Seeking Initial Accreditation: If the Program's response to the Site Visit Findings Letter is received after the March 1 date, then the Program's review will be postponed to the August 2015 meeting. In addition, if no response is received by March 1, the Program's Letter of Review status may be revoked.

Programs Seeking Continuing Accreditation: If the Program's response to the Site Visit Findings Letter is received after the March 1 due date, then the Program's response will be considered as "not received". The CoAEMSP Board will review the Program as scheduled; however, it will not consider the past due response and it may lead to a recommendation of probation.

Programs Maintaining Accreditation: If the Program's Progress Report is received after the March 1 due date, then the Program's response will be considered as "not received". The CoAEMSP Board will review the Program as scheduled; however, it will not consider the past due Progress Report and it may lead to a recommendation of probation.

Please Note! The Response to the Findings Letter or the Progress Report must be submitted as a single PDF document to karen@coaemsp.org. No exceptions!

Exclusive Interview with Darcy Hardy, PhD
The Changing Scope of Distance Education

Darcy Hardy, PhD,
Associate Vice President
for Enterprise Consulting
at Blackboard Inc.

'Distance education' is quickly becoming a misnomer, according to Dr. Darcy Hardy, who held a seminar with NASEMSO Board members and staff on the topic late last fall. CoAEMSP Executive Director Dr. George Hatch believes her insight and messages were critical enough to the future of EMS education that he recently arranged for a follow-up interview with Dr. Hardy.

"The term 'distance education' doesn't really fit what we do today," Dr. Hardy stated. With the advent of sophisticated technological advances, 'online learning', Dr. Hardy explained, may be a more accurate term to use. Today, online learning provides accessible education "anytime, anyplace, anywhere." This exciting breakthrough means quality education is now accessible geographically, time-wise, and location-wise (such as home, office or classroom). Technology has played a huge role in changing the scope of online learning, and now employs a variety of learning tools including podcasts, audio conferences, video conferences, and chat rooms, along with traditional print materials. ..................................................................

The 2014 Annual Report for the CoAEMSP is now available for data entry. Failure to submit the 2014 Annual Report by the April 1, 2015, deadline will result in the Letter of Review being revoked immediately.

LOR programs must submit the Annual Report each April 1st until accreditation has been received.

The login link is here.

Find complete directions here. (Every program is encouraged to review and print a copy!)

Visit the Annual Reports website page.

Please review the information below then complete only the following sections on the Annual Report:
  • Personnel
  • Satellites & Affiliates
  • Program Information
  • Distance Education

Key Points to Remember
  • Be sure to hit the "Update" or "Save" button before leaving each screen/section or the information entered will not be saved.

  • Enrollment & Retention: Programs in the LoR process will NOT enter any data under Enrollment & Retention until accreditation is awarded.

  • Survey Worksheet: Programs in the LoR process will NOT enter any data under Survey Worksheet or Outcomes until accreditation is awarded.

  • Satellites & Affiliates: Please enter each affiliated site used by the program. If the Paramedic program is offered at a Satellite campus and the Satellite has not been approved by Dr. Hatch, you must submit a completed Satellite Campus Approval Request Form. All Satellite campus sites must be approved by the CoAEMSP before starting a class. If the Satellite campus is approved, then you will need to enter the Satellite campus here.

  • Personnel: This section should be completed by adding all applicable program personnel. You cannot enter/edit the President, Dean, or Program Director information. These three positions require a completed CoAEMSP Personnel Change Form to be submitted to the CoAEMSP Office (email to Lynn). For LoR programs, we will update our records and may request a new CAAHEP Request for Accreditation Services if there has been a change with the President, Dean, or Program Director.

  • Program Information and Distance Education: Programs in the LoR process should complete both Program Information and the Distance Education while in the LoR process.

  • Report Submission: Consult the  Instructions on the CoAEMSP web site.

With March 1 as the due date for a large number of Self Study Reports, Progress Reports, and Responses to Site Visit Findings Letters, you should be aware of the following:
  • There may be a delay in delivery of your materials, but this does NOT mean we will consider this a late submission as long they are postmarked before March 1.

  • Upload ONLY the Self Study Report via the FileShare (email karen@coaemsp.org for instructions if you do not already have an account).

  • Only use EMAIL for Progress Reports and Responses to Site Visit Findings Letters.
