Airway Competency
Webinar
In case you missed it, you can access the webinar here.

On September 11 the CoAEMSP hosted the most popular webinar to date - the CoAEMSP's recommendation for airway competency.

Dr. Murray Kalish and Mr. Gordy Kokx shared with everyone the WHY behind CoAEMSP developing the recommendation for airway management, the HOW it arrived at its recommendation, and the WHAT of the recommendation for airway competency.
Definition of Airway Competency
By Murray A. Kalish, MD, MBA

The Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) determined it was necessary to define airway competency for paramedic programs throughout the country.  This document is not a standard, rather it is a recommendation to help programs define and obtain airway competency for their students.  This document is not fixed in stone, but will evolve with changes in the Emergency Medical Services' (EMS) community policies, particularly with reference to airway management. A Perspective on Citations
by Patricia L.Tritt, RN, MA

EMS personnel tend to be a competitive lot and everyone wants a perfect score on any evaluation.  A common refrain is "What do you mean I didn't get it right?"  Paramedic programs proceeding through the accreditation process exhibit some of the same characteristics.  At the exit interview on the second day of a site visit everyone wants to hear 'no potential citations'.

Sometimes we get our wish, but most frequently programs find a few areas that must be addressed: either by providing more data, more documentation, altering a process, adding an additional resource or resources, or providing more depth to the evaluation process. Read complete article.

UPCOMING WEBINAR ON ANNUAL REPORTS

Annual Report Instructions

If you are a program director of a CAAHEP-accredited program,
you received an email in August informing you that access to the annual report is available for data entry, along with your program's user name and password.
The filing deadline is December 1, 2013.

If you are a program that holds the CoAEMSP Letter of Review (LoR), you will receive an email in early January 2014 informing you that access to the annual report is available for data entry, along with your program's user name and password.

The filing deadline for LoR programs is April 1, 2014.

KEY POINTS TO THE ANNUAL REPORT
  1. Satellites and Affiliates: Be sure to review the definitions for Satellites and Affiliates.  Enter each Satellite campus site that has been CoAEMSP approved or that is currently being used.
  2. Enrollment & Retention: continue adding enrolled classes up through December 1, 2013.   REMINDER: The column title must match the YEAR of enrollment and not the graduation year of the class.  Do NOT enter data for classes graduating after December 1, 2013 as this data will be entered on the 2014 Annual Report.  Enter all classes enrolled at Satellite campuses up through December 1, 2013 as a separate entry.
  3. Survey Worksheet: Survey results for the graduates of 2012 are to be entered.
  4. Review each Annual Report section and hit SAVE before moving to the next section.
  5. Already filed a 2013 Annual Report? You still must update and re-submit that report.

Helpful Articles & Resources for Programs New to Accreditation

resources Often the hardest part of any project is organizing a plan to get started.

The article "Getting Started: An Action Plan for an Educational Program New to Accreditation" breaks the activities up into phases and identifies the activity and associated resource, such as the location on the CoAEMSP website that will provide the necessary information.  What could be simpler? Access it here.

Another article, "How Do I..." addresses common questions and areas that are sometimes stumbling blocks when fulfilling the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines. Access it here.

Other information about becoming accredited can be found in this section of the CoAEMSP website.
