EMS Leaders Bring EMS Community Up to Date on Accreditation Initiative

EMS Executive Directors from NASEMSO, CoAEMSP and NREMT gave a state-of-the-state accreditation initiative update in a webinar on February 25, 2013.

NASEMSO Executive Director Dia Gainor, CoAEMSP Executive Director George Hatch, and NREMT Executive Director Bill Brown brought listeners up to date on the initiative status and answered questions about accreditation. The webinar was attended by dozens of participants.

Bill Brown reviewed the history and rationale of the accreditation initiative. George Hatch gave the current status of programs that were accredited or in the process of becoming accredited, including illustrating the number of accredited programs and programs possessing a Letter of Review in each state. Dia Gainor gave the position of state officials by focusing on the Resolution on National EMS Certification & Program Accreditation put forth in 2010.

*CoAEMSP Letter of Review is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status granted by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.
