POP QUIZ!  Please get out your #2 pencils...

Hello everyone!  We are having a pop quiz. Don't worry, this is an open book quiz so can use any resource you have, however you may not copy from your neighbor. Let us begin...

Question #1, "What would have to happen to happen to make 2014 your best year yet?"

A question like this sounds cute and cliché but seriously... what would you have to experience to make this year without a doubt, the most amazing year you have had to date? Please write down your list of answers.

Question #2: "Will you take action to make 2014 the best year ever or will you do nothing? Yes or No?"

Either you will or you won't. The choice is entirely up to you. However, If you answered "No" to this question then go directly to detention. If you answered "Yes" then you may proceed to question #3.

Question #3: "What specific action will you do first to make this the best year ever?"

It is easy to do nothing and wait and see how things turn out. Are you a passive observer in your life or are you intentionally designing and creating your life?

I am fairly certain that without knowing the answers to question #1 and with out taking action to make it happen, chances are good 2014 will be just another blur of a year without anything too memorable.

And now your homework... do your answer to Question #3 now. Right now.

We are at the beginning of a new year and how the rest of this year transpires is largely up to you.

SEIZE THE DAY!  Make 2014 the best year ever!

6 Science-Based Benefits of Acupuncture... Oh Joy, Finally.

I came across this article in Prevention magazine.  While I am happy to see people being informed on some of the benefits of acupuncture, I must admit I have a bad attitude toward articles of the nature.  Its like, "Oh boy, the latest 'scientific research' has found acupuncture may have some benefits! I guess it really is a legitimate medicine! Who knew?!?" Well, I am so glad that Western science is now graciously bestowing "legitimacy" to Oriental Medicine.  Maybe now acupuncture could start be used as a primary form of health care for millions of people. Oh, wait...that already happened... like 4000 years ago.

Anyway, here are some "science-based" benefits of acupuncture. Apparently all the other benefits are not "proven" at this time.  I guess thousands of years of results has simply been a whole lot of lucky coincidences.  Whatever...  I'm just so thankful acupuncture is now being validated by science because I am starting to feel that I just might not be a total quack.  Up till now, I haven't been entirely sure.

Yes, I recognize I may possibly have a slightly bad attitude... Maybe I'm just jealous not all of my clients look this amazing happy when I work with them. :)

6 Science-Based Benefits Of Acupuncture

Research shows acupuncture therapy can be an effective alternative treatment for everything from headaches to obesity.

Has your doctor ever prescribed you a round of acupuncture? Probably not. Alternative treatments often get short shrift in standard healthcare because doctors are generally unaware of the science showing that they really are effective alternatives to drugs and medication. But a new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine may (hopefully) change that.

The researchers pooled data from nearly 18,000 people who had participated in studies examining the effectiveness of acupuncture and found that, yes, it really is a good treatment for chronic pain and that doctors should start recommending it as treatment for arthritis and other chronic ailments.

Chronic pain is certainly one of the most common reasons people seek out acupuncturists, but here are six other scientifically studied ways that acupuncture therapy can alleviate what's bothering you.

Sugar Tied To Fatal Heart Woes; Soda Is A Culprit

By LINDSEY TANNER (article printed in the News & Observer, February 3, 2014)

Could too much sugar be deadly? The biggest study of its kind suggests the answer is YES, at least when it comes to fatal heart problems.

It doesn't take all that much extra sugar, hidden in many processed foods, to substantially raise the risk, the researchers found, and most Americans eat more than the safest amount.

Having a cinnamon roll with your morning coffee, a super-sized sugary soda at lunch and a scoop of ice cream after dinner would put you in the highest risk category in the study. That means your chance of dying prematurely from heart problems is nearly three times greater than for people who eat only foods with little added sugar.

For someone who normally eats 2,000 calories daily, even consuming two 12-ounce cans of soda substantially increases the risk. For most American adults, sodas and other sugary drinks are the main source of added sugar.

Lead author Quanhe Yang of the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention called the results sobering and said it's the first nationally representative study to examine the issue.

Scientists aren't certain exactly how sugar may contribute to deadly heart problems, but it has been shown to increase blood pressure and levels of unhealthy cholesterol and triglycerides; and also may increase signs of inflammation linked with heart disease, said Rachel Johnson, head of the American Heart Association's nutrition committee and a University of Vermont nutrition professor.

Yang and colleagues analyzed national health surveys between 1988 and 2010 that included questions about people's diets. The authors used national death data to calculate risks of dying during 15 years of follow-up.

Overall, more than 30,000 American adults aged 44 on average were involved.

Previous studies have linked diets high in sugar with increased risks for non-fatal heart problems, and with obesity, which can also lead to heart trouble. But in the new study, obesity didn't explain the link between sugary diets and death. That link was found even in normal-weight people who ate lots of added sugar.

"Too much sugar does not just make us fat; it can also make us sick," said Laura Schmidt, a health policy specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. She wrote an editorial accompanying the study in Monday's JAMA Internal Medicine.

Hawaii Council Passes Bill to Ban GMO Cultivation

(Article from Gina-Marie Cheeseman, seen in the Triple Pundit, Friday November 22nd, 2013)

The Hawaii County Council, the governing council for the Big Island of Hawaii, voted 6 to 3 for a bill that bans genetically modified organisms (GMO) from being grown on the island. Bill 113 the bill imposes "restrictions on the cultivation, propagation, development, and testing of genetically engineered crops and plants to protect public and private property as well as surface waters, vulnerable watersheds, and our Island's coastal waters."

The bill would levy a $1,000 fine per day for violations and those found violating would be responsible for "all costs of investigation," including attorneys fees and any damages that result to neighboring non-GMO crops or plants.

To this, I very professionally say, "Eat it Monsanto!"

(But don't eat your GMO foods because they have been shown to cause cancer, and tumors, and mess up all your hormones, and weaken your immunity...)
