ST. VALENTINE'S DAY IN MEXICO

"La amistad es lluvia de flores preciosas"

"Friendship is like a shower of precious flowers"

Aztec poem

As this fragment of a beautiful Aztec poem illustrates, since pre-Columbian times Mexicans regard friendship very highly, considering it a precious gift of life. Nowadays in Mexico, as in the rest of the world, we celebrate on February 14, El Día de San Valentín (Valentine's Day) popularly named El Día del Amor y la Amistad- the day of love and friendship. People commonly give flowers, candies and balloons to their romantic partners, but it's also a day to show appreciation for friends

Celebrating Friendship:

Everyone can take part in Mexican Valentine's Day celebrations, because it's not just for lovers, it's also for friends. It's a time for people to show appreciation to the people they care about - this way, there's no reason to feel left out if you don't have a significant other. Buy some flowers, write a poem or make a gift for one of your friends - let them know you care!

Say "I love you" in Spanish:

If you think Spanish is a romantic language, you're right! If you'd like to tell your special someone how you feel about them in Spanish, you may find it a bit more challenging than just learning the words. Saying I love you in Spanish can be a bit more complicated than in English because there are two different ways to say it. "Te quiero" is said freely among friends and family members but "te amo" is used to denote a stronger feeling.

Tour our Traditional Neighborhood

We are often asked where specific places and services are located. Since we are conveniently located in town with no hills around us, walking everywhere is easy. It is why we created a guide to help you navigate your way around, both virtually and for a real walking tour, of our fun packed neighborhood.

Rivera Cuale Walking Tour

Rivera Cuale Condominiums sit at the juncture of four colonias (neighborhood areas). Literally one block in any direction takes you into a different colonia. El Caloso behind us is a very typical Mexican neighborhood; Gringo Gulch is on the north side, which Elizabeth Taylor made famous; south is Las Canoas, which follows the river over to the tunnel road bypass and beyond to Paso Ancho, a rustic village with a nice walking trail; and due west across the river is Colonia Emiliano Zapata, which rolls on to Old Town, Zona Romantica, Los Muertos Beach, and spectacular sunsets every night for your viewing pleasure.

The Google Earth map we've created will introduce you to our neighborhood. Once you are on the Google Earth map, expand the slider on the left so the icons are not all crowded together. To navigate the map, just click on anything on the list on the left, or on the icon on the map, and a window will open in its location, complete with photo, address, brief description, and approximate walking time. Enjoy. Click here to begin your tour

Nothing on the map is more than a 20 minute walk from Rivera Cuale; of course sometimes one block has so many interesting places to pop into for a look-see, it might take a half hour just to navigate that block. So, all times are relative to your curiosity and your walking pace. Some obvious exceptions to walking are the gas station, car wash, and entrance to the Libramiento, since these are automobile related. Nothing on the map is more than a 20 minute walk from Rivera Cuale. Enjoy!

. Be patient. The map may take a minute or two to load. Be sure to enlarge to view all listings.
