 El Día de los Muertos

 Dia de los Muertos

At first glance, the Mexican custom of El Día de los Muertos - the Day of the Dead - may sound much like the U.S. custom of Halloween. After all, the celebration traditionally starts at midnight the night of Oct. 31, and the festivities are abundant in images related to death.

But the customs have different origins, and their attitudes toward death are different: In the typical Halloween festivities, death is something to be feared. But in el día de los muertos, death - or at least the memories of those who have died - is something to be celebrated.

Rituals celebrating the lives of dead ancestors had been performed by these Mesoamerican civilizations for at least 3,000 years.

El día de los muertos, which continues until Nov. 2, has become one of the biggest holidays in Mexico, and celebrations are becoming more common in areas of the United States with a large Hispanic population. Its origins are distinctly Mexican.

The souls of children are believed to return first on November 1, with adult spirits following on November 2. Plans for the festival are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods that will be offered to the dead. During the period of October 31 and November 2 families usually clean and decorate the graves. with ofrendas, or offerings. These include wreaths of marigold, which are thought to attract the souls of the dead toward the offerings, and toys brought for dead children (los angelitos, or little angels) and bottles of tequila, mezcal, pulque or atole for adults.

A common symbol of the holiday is the skull, which celebrants represent in masks called calacas. Sugar skulls, inscribed with the names of the deceased on the forehead, are often eaten by a relative or friend. Other special foods for El Día de los Muertos includes Pan de Muertos (bread of the dead), a sweet egg bread made in many shapes, from plain rounds to skulls and rabbits.

Dear Friends,

Lounge Area

Here we are on the cusp of high season once again. It's hard to believe summer is over; it was a relatively mild one. We didn't have many heavy rainstorms, so no major problems occurred. We regularly had nice cooling rains in the evenings. The temperatures are coming down, and the rains appear to be all but over. Halloween is just around the corner. Here in Puerto Vallarta, as in all of Mexico, preparations are being made for the Day of the Dead Celebrations, which coincide with Halloween.

Congratulations to our very first occupant, Petra, who owned a limited edition 2 bedroom. She decided she wanted to move up to a larger 2 bedroom. She put her condo on the market and it was sold in less than a month. And she has now just moved into her fabulous new larger 2 bedroom condo.
