Listening with eyes. Talking with hands.

Most of us with "normal hearing" take communication for granted. But those who are unable to hear often go through life underdeveloped socially and intellectually because of communication barriers. How does a Deaf person interact with hearing people through auditory languages and sound?

Many Deaf do not reach their God-given potential if they are not properly educated and trained. They may not hear with their ears, but they listen with their eyes. They may not speak with their voice, but they talk with their hands. When using sign language to properly educate, train, and develop their God-given talent, Deaf CAN lead productive and happy lives, showing that they are not lacking, but capable of doing anything a hearing person can do.

Deaf CAN! Coffee - a vocational ministry

One of the HarvestCall ministries in Jamaica is Deaf Can! Coffee, a coffee business operated by Deaf young men from the Kingston CCCD campus. It gives them an opportunity to develop their talents, lead productive lives, and share in God's message of salvation and redemption, through the context of a coffee shop.

Awareness Tour Scheduled for Jamaica May 3-6, 2017

A short visit is planned for anyone interested in travelling to Jamaica to observe the Deaf Can! ministry, as well as other Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD) education and development ministries and a stop at the EnGedi House. This is an opportunity to observe HarvestCall's work in Jamaica up close in a few days and develop awareness of the importance of these ministries.

For additional information on this trip, please contact Loren Dettwyler at 503-580-9629 or lmdettwyler@gmail.com. (Please contact him before March 10. Space is limited.)

In II Timothy 1:6, Paul exhorted a young Timothy to" .... stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands."  DeafCan Coffee provides an excellent means for developing and exhorting these young men to "stir up" their God-given gifts and abilities while stirring up lattes and mochas for their customers. As He works among these young Jamaican men, may the Holy Spirit exhort each of us to stir up and fan into flame the gifts he has so abundantly bestowed upon our brotherhood.

In Christian Love,
