Hurricane Matthew Update - Conditions in Haiti
The people of Haiti and our missionaries serving in Bonne Fin and Les Cayes are grateful for all the prayers sent to the Father on their behalf.

For those who don't follow us on Facebook, this Email contains a summary of what we know now. Information has been arriving in bits and pieces, so this is not a complete picture.

First and foremost, all our missionaries in both locations are safe and sound. We praise God for that.

Bonne Fin - Hospital Lumiere

Being further inland, this area was not hit as hard as coastal regions, but there is still significant damage. 70% of all trees are down. The hospital building is mostly undamaged. A majority of the power lines are down. Most of the solar panels were unscathed. Staff is working to restore generator power to the hospital until the sun can recharge batteries and provide power to the hospital, although most of the compound will remain without power. Once power is restored to the hospital, it is expected reliable communications can be re-established via satellite internet. Most people in the community lost the roofs to their homes. Many are seeking shelter at the hospital. The roads in the area are washed out in many places, with hundreds of trees blocking the way.

Bonne Fin - Hospital Lumiere
This city bore the full brunt of the storm. Thankfully, the sturdy buildings our missionaries reside in at the missionary compound of Citi Lumiere weathered it well. There were other homes on the compound that lost their roofs. The electricity is out in the city due to downed poles and lines. Power lines are down at the compound. Due to power and communications being down, we do not yet know the extent of damage to the city and its people, but it is expected to be major.

Response

HarvestCall is assessing the situation and evaluating appropriate responses to this disaster. This includes both our missionaries on the ground and stateside leaders, volunteers and staff. Once the initial confusion clears, we will inform you of how you can be involved in helping this country that once again has been ravished by disaster. There has been severe damage to the limited infrastructure and many, many families already residing in compromised living conditions are pushed even closer to hopelessness and despair.

There is a high likelihood that we will be dispersing significant dollars from our Disaster Fund. Contributions are appreciated.

In the midst of this storm, we are moved to praise God for:
  • Placing love and compassion for the Haitian people in the hearts of our forefathers who began establishing ministries and relationships that positioned us as a brotherhood to demonstrate Christ's love during the earthquake and now in the aftermath of Matthew.
  • His mercy as many prayed and fasted for our  brethren and their families; that he kept them in the midst of the  storm and he has promised to provide wisdom and grace to them and many others who will minister in his name during this time of great need. (2 Cor. 3:5)
  • Moving the hearts of our benevolent brotherhood to give back to the Lord so that funds are immediately available to support and augment the recovery ministry that will now take place.
  • The reminder that he alone is sovereign, that our plans are always subject to his, and that we are pilgrims passing through a world of disasters and suffering as a result of sin's grotesque distortion of his divine creation.
Please, please continue to pray for the Haitian people, the HarvestCall leaders in the Caribbean, and for our missionaries in the face of overwhelming challenges and extreme physical and emotional demands. Phil 4:6-7
