Upgrading your computer could benefit others
For many of us, when a computer gets more than few years old, we buy a new, faster model. But what happens to your old one? While it may no longer be the latest and greatest, it can be a useful tool in providing a Haitian a better future.

These young people are grateful for opportunity

Most Haitians have a primitive lifestyle, at least by American standards. However, in spite of their economic conditions, many young people yearn for the opportunity to learn, advance, and develop their God-given skills in a marketable and useful trade, to earn a living, provide for their families, and become a productive member of society.

In the village of Chantal in southern Haiti, young adults at a HarvestCall-supported trade school, gather to receive computer training on donated desktops and laptops. (See "Ways to help" below if interested in donating your hardware.) Being proficient with Microsoft Windows, Word, Office, Excel and Powerpoint will open doors of opportunity for these students. While attending trade school, they also gain knowledge of God's Word, the most important subject of all.

Trade schools provide a variety of marketable skills

HarvestCall supports five trade schools in southern Haiti with equipment, construction work teams, supplies and tools, and training assistance for the last twenty years. Approximately 280 students are enrolled and this year, 119 young Haitians will graduate with a marketable skill. In addition to the needed training for their educational development, these graduates have also been engaged in regular Bible studies for their spiritual needs.

The five trade schools (in Port a Piment, Cayes, Chantal, Petit Trou, and Aquin) provide young Haitian men and women with opportunities to learn masonry, plumbing, tile installation, and woodworking, sewing and cooking skills, and computer training. Bible studies and training are an integral part of the curriculum for all enrolled.

Ways to help

Pray for the efforts to train young Haitians in the HarvestCall's Trade School
program. Pray for the HarvestCall work teams and coordinators as they support the program.

Donate a laptop computer to the program. Functional used computers are needed. Contact Bro. Andy Getz for system requirements and to learn more.

Join a work team to the Haiti Trade Schools. A schedule is published in the Silver Lining and posted to the HarvestCall website.

Consider joining the full time missionary team at Citi Lumiere in Cayes, Haiti. A missionary is needed to coordinate Haiti Trade School activity and assist in program administration. This missionary would be part of the HarvestCall missionary team in Cayes working with the construction department and Haiti Water Aid well drilling. For additional information, contact Bro. Rick Wuethrich.

Donations can be made online, through your church rep, or by sending a check.

The HarvestCall Trade School outreach is a great example of ministering "with" rather than "to" or "for." Instead of simply giving material goods to those in need and thus creating dependency, our brethren work together with community leaders and school administrators to create opportunities for young Haitians to develop their God-given abilities in the context of Christian teaching. Ultimately, our desire is that they (and we) would love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and that HE is glorified by fruitful, obedient lives.

In Christian Love,
John Huber
