In a classroom north of Cayes, Haiti, a young man named Francois is studying hard. He's a student in the Haiti Trade Schools and is being instructed in the craft of plumbing. In particular, Francois is being taught how to maintain water well pumps. Not only will this skill give him the ability to find gainful employment someday, it also helps ensure the long-term success of the life-sustaining wells. Plumbing is just one of the trades being taught in the vocational schools supported by World Relief. Other trades include metalworking, carpentry, masonry, tailoring, and computers. World Relief has also been active in the support, expansion, and maintenance of five trade schools located in Aquin, Port-a-Piment, Les Cayes, Petit-Trou, and Chantel, Haiti. Both well drilling and trade schools are active programs requiring continuing support, much of it in-country with the Haitian workers, students, and instructors. The work has grown to a point where there is a need for a full-time program coordinator "on the ground" in Haiti to provide accountability and support. |
