Hospital Lumiere

As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
Gal 6:10

With God's help and the brotherhood's support, great strides have been made in improving medical services for needy Haitians at Hospital Lumière, which is being managed by World Relief. However, there is one recurring problem that prevents us from providing the care we believe the Lord desires. Allow me to illustrate:

Mackenson cried out in pain as he was rushed to Hospital Lumière's surgical room. A victim of a construction accident, his badly fractured arm needed to be surgically set. Doctors and surgical techs sprang into action as various monitors beeped in the background, But then...

...darkness.

Sadly, this happens all too often at Hospital Lumi
ère. The
facility depends upon a limited hydroelectric plant and two old and unreliable diesel generators. There are frequent brownouts and blackouts.

Poor, unreliable power drastically shortens the life of the electrical equipment, requiring costly repairs and replacement.

More importantly, the blackouts can be life threatening to patients in critical situations.

Assessment
Recently, a team of electrical engineers traveled to Hospital Lumière to study the situation and provide recommendations for a long-term electrical system solution that would have:
  • High reliability,
  • Low maintenance
  • Ease of future upgradeability

Based upon their assessment and recommendations, we are launching a three-part project to provide consistent electricity.

And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. Luke 10:34

  Part 1 - Conservation & New Generator

Efficient Lighting

Three hundred hospital and campus lights will be changed from fluorescent and incandescent bulbs to LED lighting. The remaining fluorescent lights will be controlled by motion detectors and timers. This will reduce the hospital's electrical needs by up to 25%.

Water Conservation

To make the most of the available water, a system will throttle the turbine water inlet valves to match water flow with electrical demand. The improved efficiency will increase the hydro run time from the current 12 hours per day to as much as 24 hours per day.

New Generator

One of the two generators will be refurbished to keep it operating efficiently. The other generator is old and inefficient and will be replaced.

Needed for Part 1: $39,850.

Part 2 - Increased Reservoir Capacity

To capture and retain more water during Haiti's rainy season, the spillway height will be raised three feet to increase the reservoir capacity by 500,000 gallons. The reservoir liner will also be replaced.

Needed for Part 2: $50,000.
Part 3 - Solar Power System

A 40 kW solar power system is proposed to increase the hospital's ability to provide clean power to critical systems and equipment.

Highlights

  • The hospital roof has ample space for the solar panels.
  • Solar power is low maintenance, reliable and sustainable.
  • This system will pay for itself in less than 4 ½ years by reducing diesel fuel purchases for electricity generation.
Needed for Part 3: $207,900.

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18

  Opportunity to Help

Will you help us keep the lights on at Hospital Lumière?

We need:

Prayers

Your prayers help so much. Pray that God would give caregivers and staff wisdom to make the right decisions. And pray that patients would see the need of their souls even as they seek help for their bodies.

Financial Support

This electricity upgrade is a special project that goes beyond the normal needs of the hospital. The only way it will be possible is if the Lord provides the additional $297,750 required. If you feel moved to help this project, please consider a gift at this time.

(If we are blessed to receive more funds than are required for the electrical improvements, we'll apply the extra where most needed at the hospital.)

Three ways to contribute:

1. Through your local WR representative

2. Send your donation to the address below.               Checks should be made out to:
