December 2013
ISSUE 39

We RiverQuest guides had an inkling in October that the fall steelhead run of 2013 on the Muskegon River would be something special, but little did we know how special it would prove to be. Not only were the numbers of steelhead up, but the size and condition of the fish was extraordinary.  Fish in excess of twelve pounds were commonplace and enough 15 lb. plus chromers found their way to our nets that day-to-day, we weren't surprised when one or more of our guides  was crowing about beasts netted (or lost, of course!).  In all, a most memorable run, and even now, as we've transitioned into winter steelheading, the number of fish in the river continues excellent, which, of course, pumps us up for some of our favorite steelheading, forays on the MO clothed in white, silence all 'round.

Then, too, a word about our resident brown and rainbow trout populations that are eliciting smiles  and admiring comments .  Large and plump, the trout promise some special winter  fly fishing nymphing and, to be sure, later, some wonderful spring streamer and dry fly fishing as well.  So, in this season of thanks and reflection,  we pause to consider how fortunate we and our customers are that the Muskegon River surrenders its bounty so generously to us all.
