Greetings!

Flexibility.  Certainly one of the qualities Mother Nature requires of fly fishing guides.  We at RiverQuest  would like think that we exercise flexibility as we problem solve the hand Mother Nature deals us each day on the river. Pericles, the great Greek statesman and patron of the arts, lauded the Athenians for their "happy and gracious flexibility."

Even as we wrote last month, though, it hasn't always been easy of late.  Near torrential rains, high winds, and spiking river levels have tested our customers and clients. Even now, the MO is running on the order of 3390 cubic feet per second, some 1200 above its normal flows.  On the plus side, streamer fishing for browns and rainbows has been extraordinarily fine.  On the other hand, the hatches we normally fish, have been nigh unto impossible to enjoy due to those higher than normal flows.

No complaints here, though; not only could it all revert to more normal conditions in a matter of days, the fact is that we take what we receive and adapt.  Even with the higher river flows, for example, the color of the river affects which patterns and colors fish best.  The yellows and blues that fished so well in heavy flows may yield to more natural colors in clearer water.  It's our daily challenge to figure it out.  Some times we hit it right; other times, not so much.  Our hope, though, is that as we practice that requisite flexibility, we are "happy and gracious" all the while.
