Welcome to RiverQuest Charters/Muskegon River Lodge
Greetings!
December wraps our 2012 hospitality and fly fishing year with the cheer and joy of the Christmas season. Truly grateful we are for you our friends, guests, and clients who have made 2012 our best year yet. New clients and returning regulars, a growing array of available fly fishing techniques, Chef Heather's ever-evolving creative entrees, and heartwarming memories of days astream followed by mellowing at the Lodge as twilight would fade, brought smiles all round. Then, too, we've enjoyed hosting customers, owners, and staff of our affiliated fly shops and are eager to grow our relationships in 2013. 2013 will be our first full year as an Orvis Endorsed Lodge, and our new relationship with Orvis has already proven a win for all concerned. Our pledge to you is simple: we'll give you our best each day so that the confidence you place in us with a stay at the Lodge or a day or two of fly fishing in our boats with our guides is well placed. We look forward to serving you and anticipate the best of times and the tightest of lines on what we regard as Michigan's river of rivers-the mighty Muskegon.

Muskegon River Lodge Winter is beginning close in and anchor the remnants of fall beneath a blanket of white. Our fly fishermen know the days of busy rivers are behind them and look forward to the river's solitude with a smile. December at the Lodge begins our favorite part of the year here. The reasons are many; come and see and you'll know, but here are a few "Best Regards" from some of our recent guests to help you along:
"What a fantastic experience! I definitely would not put 'fishing' in my top five things I would like to do on the weekend (things that would come before fishing include: shopping, a day at the spa, reading a book)..but this changed my perception. We had such a relaxing weekend at the lodge, the scenery on the river was spectacular and I actually had fun catching fish! To top this all off, as a vegetarian, the food that was catered on the boat and dinner at the lodge was absolutely amazing. I don't even eat that well at a Chicago restaurant. We will definitely make this an annual trip during the fall."
~Megan, Chicago IL
"What can I say... This place rocks!! The lodge was very clean cozy and comfortable.. also decorated nice!!We really had a great time in the Man Cave..hanging out playing Darts!! In the morning I fished with Steve. My first time fishing, beautiful scenery and Steve was very patient with me!!! I needed a lot of help and he made the day tons of fun!!! Thanks again Steve. Highly recommend this place."
~Tina, Grand Rapids MI
"Took my son steelhead fishing for his first-time ever. Fished with CPT Dave Devries, who was an awesome guide and teacher. My son caught a gorgeous 7 pound steelie hen. Stunning day! Lunch at the Lodge was excellent. I can't say enough about the Riverquest guys and the Muskegon Lodge. Gorgeous facility, excellent teaching and guiding, and an awesome experience. My son now has his own fly gear and will take up fly fishing in Colorado where he lives! But, he had to start on the Muskegon!"
~Chad, Rochester Hills, MI

RiverQuest Charters Have you ever wondered why we love to swing flies for steelhead on the Muskegon River? Well, here is a glimpse into what it is all about:
 | | Fall Swing | As we head into the winter months, the "swing" will certainly soften, but for the determined angler, what could be more rewarding? Both steelhead and trout fly fishing and should improve over the last couple of weeks as much needed rains have finally nourished the watershed. Angling pressure has subsided, and it's time for that fly fishing solitude we all treasure!
Concerned about bad weather? So are we; Mother Nature commands our respect and we accord it to her. So, during the winter months, as personal and professional calendars allow, we encourage clients to let the weatherman call your fly fishing shots. Of course, we continue to enter dates on the calendar weeks in advance, but we also encourage people to look to the weather to give the green light to fly fish. When the forecast calls for calm or light wind; and some sunshine to warm the body, soul, and water; call us right then! With as little as a 12 hour notice, we'll host you on the river the very next day. Truly, you will not regret it. Dress appropriately and leave the rest to us-the hot coffee, the grilled steaks, and eight hours of teaching and coaching, fly rod in hand. Then, and only then, will you come to know the beauty and bounty of fly fishing the Muskegon in winter white-an experience only a few get to know.

Perspective. It is the reason we all decide to put down our traditional fishing gear and take up fishing with fur, feather, and hope. Not because it is the easiest way and not because it is the most effective way. When we, as fly-fisherman, decide to start our journey, we don't even know where it will lead us. But we do seek a different perspective, something we are often surprised and enchanted by in the same moment.
For me, memories of stumbling onto my first caddis emergence from a crystal clear Canadian lake while fishing for smallmouth as a teen are forever etched. Smallmouth fishing had been tough on the lake with only ten inch smalllies showing themselves. In those days, I carried my "back-up" spinning rod because of my then fly-fishing insecurities. Nonetheless, despite throwing every lure that should have worked, I came up short. As it happened, the larger fish seemed more interested in eating caddis pupa emerging from the base of the beaver lodges and submerged timber than the lures I was throwing to imitate baitfish. When the pieces came together and revealed the reason for my lack of success, I was blown away-fascinated. Floating out in the lake and peering into the benthos, as I actually did, revealed that the large smallmouth were actively cruising the shoreline devouring every chubby pupa that dared peek out of its case. I still remember the exhilaration of that first cast made with a Hares Ear nymph and sinking line. After making a few small strips when my line had sunken nearly to the bottom, the line went taut, and I was into my first weighable fish of the trip. What a new perspective!
As fly-fishermen, we are constantly reminded that our perspective is always under adjudication. The fish are the judges, and our job becomes investigating, observing, and interpreting the natural world in a way that meets with their approval. Sometimes this can be done by a fly change and at other times, a slight leader reconfiguration or a lighter tippet size. Maybe it is done by fishing a riffle that you normally fish from one side of the river but might be fished better from the other. Possibly casting downstream to a feeding fish instead of up. Or, simply looking at the food that is readily available to the trout you are seeking via seining. Next time you fish your favorite river, remember to look for a new perspective; make it a point to learn something you never knew. All it takes is thought and a bit of time.

Book Review by Glen Blackwood
The holidays have different meanings for each of us. Tradition is a word that is bantered about this time of the year in conjunction with killing our Christmas tree, Oyster dressing, parties, music, church services, and lastly presents. Presents seem to be a higher priority these days than when I was a boy since then, the day after Thanksgiving, as well as Thanksgiving itself, was time for pheasant and duck shooting, not shopping. My family spent time afield; grandfathers, uncles, and cousins-along with a passel of dogs from well-bred lines to mutts-strolled muddy fields and fence lines. With that said, we did receive Christmas presents, and my favorite presents each year were the sporting books that Santa, along with my parents and grandparents, slipped under our tree. We would open these after our noon meal on the 25th, and I would spend the rest of the day reading stories of trout and birds. This was the start of books being a large part of my life. As this Christmas draws near, the book that will be under the tree this year will be Fly Fishing the Harriman Ranch of the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. This new title by noted long time Railroad Ranch Guide John McDaniel is not only a look into one of our country's best trout streams but also a treatise on sight fishing for large selective trout with dry flies. The "Ranch," as many call this section of the Henry's Fork, is a flat, placid piece of water that is home to not only larger than life trout but hatches as well. Some of my best fishless days have come on this stretch of water. The mayflies are prolific, and caddis swarm in mass. The fish feed cautiously, mainly on naturals but can be fooled by a well dressed fly and even better drift. It is for these reasons that Mr. McDaniel's book should be read by any enthusiastic dry fly angler. This hard cover book Published by Whitefish Press not only discusses the water's rich history and bug life but talks about angling strategy from a very experienced angler's perspective. The author guides on this water and personally fishes the river as well. He is a focused student of this trout stream. The third chapter titled "Finding and Approaching Fish" is a must read for dry fly anglers. Chapter Five, titled "Hooking and Landing large Trout on Light Tackle," provides insight that all anglers can absorb. Along with these two stellar chapters, McDaniels discusses casting, presentation, flies, and conservation. Well placed four color photographs and line drawings accent the author's text. With that stated, it is the concepts held within the pages that will hold the reader's attention and improve one's fishing. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that my good friend Per Brandin wrote the introduction to this book. Per is not only a very talented bamboo fly rod builder but one of the most intellectual anglers I know. He told me of this project a few years back and said I would enjoy this work once published. He was correct. I recommend Fly Fishing The Harriiman Ranch whether you fish out west or on the Muskegon. It is full of insight that will improve your angling. Christmas is about believing. Angling as well is about the same thing. Believing. Believing the sulphers will hatch or the drakes will fall. Many of you know that I am a just a big kid. A big kid that wants Santa to bring me a spinner fall and a large sipping trout under the tree, but in case that doesn't happen I am going to wrap a copy of this new book and slide it under the tree to me from my dogs. We will have a Christmas lunch, and just like the little kid of 40 years ago, I will spend my Christmas afternoon reading and dreaming of trout. Happiest of Holidays Glen Blackwood To purchase this book, please contact Glen by phone at 616.866.6060 or simply send him an email. |
