WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Help Abundance bring better school lunches to Chatham county. We're organizing the screening of the documentary Cafeteria Man and getting all the relevant stakeholders in the room for the urgent discussion. We're bringing Tony Geraci to Pittsboro, Cafeteria man himself! We're inviting all Chatham County School board members, cafeteria staff, teachers, parents, and town board to the event on January 13th!

taking place on February 7th, will bring tools and solutions for climate change adaptation to over 150 North Carolina farmers and agricultural researchers.

These are just a couple ways Abundance Foundation is bringing people together to create more resilient NC communities.

As 2013 comes to a close,
we're reflecting on all the changes we've had at Abundance and in the communities we serve. This year we've grown from 3 employees to 5, and 2014 looks as if it is bursting with more changes and greater potential than ever.

In February we hosted the inaugural Farming Strategies for our Changing Climate conference at Pittsboro's CCCC to help farmers adapt to climate change by connecting farmers and regional agriculture researchers.
State climatologist Ryan Boyles and co-author of the USDA's paper on National Climate Change Adaptation for Agriculture, Laura Lengnick of Warren Wilson were keynote speakers. The day-long event helped identify problems our Piedmont farmers were experiencing and we got started working on bottom-up solutions.

This year, we helped organize the nation's first ever ongoing "farmer's market" for wild food and herbs. The Wild Food + Herb Market was held monthly at Carrboro Commons and got substantial media attention, both locally, nationally, and internationally. With a mission to support local herbalists, native plant educators, and foragers while offering empowering all-ages education, and wild foods and herbal remedies to the public, it was community-building in many ways.opening market

In October we celebrated our 6th Annual Amazing Pepper Festival at Briar Chapel's Boulder Park! In partnership with WUNC, Briar Chapel, and many other supportive local businesses, non-profits, artists, musicians, and eaters, we had our BIGGEST, MOST FUN Pepper Festival yet!

Our 2013 DIY workshop series rocked because of you!!

 The "stats":

222 new folks came together to

learn about 15 new skills.

They stretched (& ate immediately!)

 14 balls of mozzarella

held 42 chickens

made 7 jars of kimchi

82 folks in that crew of 222 started the conversation to grow tilapia in their backyards!

All in all, 2013 was a gigantic success!!

The Abundance Foundation is thrilled to thank all our participants, sponsors and instructors for such a engaging year of hands-on learning. Keep an eye out for our 2014 Workshops!

Our Youth Sustainability Tours saw about 500 students from public schools and homeschool groups, as well as scout groups and after-school clubs. They learned about sustainable agriculture by walking through the rows of Piedmont Biofarm and identifying and tasting fresh vegetables. They learned about renewable energy in North Carolina by watching how biodiesel is made at Piedmont Biofuels, and how solar-double cropping increases efficiency on a farm.
